CARNEW EMMETS captured the Spring Hurling League when they overcame Glenealy in the final of the competition played in Carnew on Saturday evening last, June 16.

This game was played on the old pitch at Carnew GAA Grounds. The pitch was in pristine condition and had recovered marvellously from the tough treatment it received during the wet spring months.

Both sides were slow to settle and had wides before the first incident of note – the awarding of a penalty to visitors Glenealy after five minutes.

Emmets’ goalie Robert Fitzgerald saved comfortably and we had to wait until the tenth minute for the opening score of the game when Gary Hughes pointed a Glenealy free.

Both sides continued to be wasteful of chances until Enda Donohue opened the Carnew account with a point after 13 minutes.

James Manley immediately restored the Glenealy advantage with a point from play and Gary Hughes made it 0-3 to 0-1 in favour of the visitors after 20 minutes.

Two quick points from centre forward Padraig Doran and an Enda Donohue free brought the sides level.

John Manley and Padraig Doran again exchanged points just as the first half entered the time added on period.

However, the Emmets finished the half with a flourish and points from Drew Brennan and a long range effort from centre half back Conall McCrea left them ahead by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

Carnew Emmets brought on Sean Kinsella and Seamus Osbourne at the break and Graham Keogh entered the fray early in the second half.

The home side upped their game in the second period but were wasteful of some good scoring chances.

Conall McCrea, Jack Doyle and Padraig Doran were dominant around the middle and fullback John Walshe and steady goalkeeper Robert Fitzgerald were closing down the Glenealy opportunities.

Enda Donohue, Padraig Doran and Donohue again had three Carnew points in the first five minutes of the second half.

Gary Hughes pointed three frees for Glenealy between the seventh and 20th minutes to leave just two points in the game at this stage.

Carnew were having the better of the exchanges but were not putting the scores on the board. Graham Keogh had a couple of wides but was unfortunate to see a goalbound strike came back off the upright. Wicklow County Chairman Martin Fitzgerald with his son Bob who lined out in goals for Carnew Emmets in their victory over Glenealy last weekend.

Enda Donohue pushed the gap out to four points but Glenealy were not gone yet. It took a brilliant save from Robert Fitzgerald to keep out a great shot from Emmet Byrne.

The game finished with Graham Keogh getting on the scoreboard with a point and a response from Glenealy full-forward Alan Driver who scored the final point of the game.

County Chairman Martin Fitzgerald presented the League Trophy to Carnew captain Wayne Kinsella immediately after the game.
