COMMUNITY GAMES at Shillelagh

MORE than 600 athletes proved they were all champions as they competed at the County Wicklow Glendalough Hotel Community Games Track and Field finals in Shillelagh on Saturday.

It rained as the pipe band led the parade with Roundwood being judged the overall winner with BBK/R and Shillelagh runners up.

The pledges were read in both English and Irish by children from Roundwood and Rathrdum and the torch was carried and lit by a child from Westside. A minute’s silence was observed for all our loved ones who had passed away during the year and get well soon to our Life President Lily Kavanagh Enniskerry.

Sincere thanks to Shillelagh and Liam Lyons from Carlow who as ever had everything in pristine condition. Thanks were also offered to the sponsors who help make the day so special, Red Cross, and last, but by no means least, the volunteers from all the areas and the County Board, all of whom work tirelessly all year to make all our events momentous for the children and keep Community Games to the forefront in County Wicklow.

Once the opening formalities were out of the way, the gods of community past saw fit to turn on the sunshine. MC Bill Porter, Rathdrum, got the games underway with the under-6 relays.

The order of the day was heats, semi-finals and finals and all areas performed well. The finishing judges had to be on their toes as there were some tight finishes –showing that the gold medal was hard to achieve and ensuring a place at the Aldi National Finals in Limerick on August 17 to 19. The day ended with the adult fun relay with Shillelagh in first place and Aughrim/Annacurra coming home in second.

The Ann McLoughlin award was presented by Ann’s parents to Suneva Nolan of BBK/R.

The award is presented annually to a volunteer for many years of unselfish service to Wicklow Community games. The county then presented Tony and Bridget McLoughlin and Liam Lyons with a beautiful photograph of the 2017 presentation to County PRO Phyllis Farrell on the 25th anniversary of Ann’s death. Sincere thanks you to Barry Hamilton for the photo.

Wicklow Community Games wish to sincerely thank our main sponsor for 2018, Pat Casey Glendalough hotel. Without the help of the sponsor the community games could not happen.

Wicklow Community games extend a sincere thank you to Wicklow People/Sport and East Coast Radio/Sport who continue to promote our games in the media.

“There are too many people to name but to all the area committees, our County Wicklow Board committee, the volunteers, the Parents and especially to our children who make our day so special. Congratulation to each and everyone of you. You are all winners. Congratulations to all our children who have qualified for the Aldi National Finals in Limerick in August,” said a Wicklow Community Games spokesperson.
