RATHNEW ARKLOW TOWN 8 0

IT was a goal fest for Rathnew under-13s as they put eight past Arklow Town in a dominant performance at Bridgewater Centre Park on Sunday morning.

The Rathnew side were in terrific form and started the game in the best possible way as they managed to open the scoring within seven minutes with a goal from Max Gullimet.

A corner was whipped into the danger area by Michael Cash which led to a goal-line scramble but the Arklow Town defence couldn’t prevent Gullimet leaping above everyone to nod the ball into the back of the net for a dream start for Rathnew.

The away side continued the pressure after the goal as they doubled their lead two minutes after their first, this time from Michael Cash.

A well taken corner again proved to be clinical for the home side as Cash made the slightest of touches with his head to nod the ball into the net from the corner.

Arklow goalkeeper Niall Byrne couldn’t adjust his feet in time to keep the header out as the ball nestled into the corner of the net.

Cash then celebrated with a Cristiano Ronaldo style goal celebration in very Ronaldoesque fashion.

The home side found themselves under severe pressure throughout the first half but had their keeper to thank as Niall Byrne pulled off save after save in the Arklow goal.

The keeper was always quick off his goal line to prevent the Rathnew attackers threatening the goal.

His best save of the game came on the 15th minute when Rathnew midfielder Cole Byrne tried to lob Byrne, who was off his line, but the Arklow shot stopper managed to get his finger tips to the ball and prevent the third goal.

Unfortunately for the home side their opponents were relentless and were hungry for more goals and scored their third on the 22nd minute after some excellent footwork from winger Bill

Michael Cash got his second of the game on the 27th minute after being set up by some great and unselfish play from his team mate Bill Moorehouse.

Moorehouse made a run with the ball into the penalty area and made the Arklow keeper leave his goal line as he only had the keeper to beat, but as Moorehouse rounded the keeper he slipped the ball across the line to Cash who easily tapped the ball into the back of the net.

Rathnew continued to express themselves and grabbed another two goals to make it 7-0 before half-time.

Goals from defender Sidahar Santhosh and an excellent corner from Bill Moorehouse meant that the away side had a massive seven-goal cushion going in at the half-time break.

Arklow Town came out in the second half and threw everything they had in at their opponents, they chased down every ball and defended as if their lives depended on it but just couldn’t find the break-through they needed to try and get themselves back into the game.

Arklow did have an opportunity to grab a consolation goal late in the game with a penalty kick but substitute keeper Michael Cash pulled off a great save to keep a clean sheet.

Rathnew’s Josh Merigan finished the scoring with five minutes left to play as he scored his side’s eighth goal of the game with a clever finish after he rounded the keeper.

Credit to Arklow Town who kept fighting and fighting even though they were many goals behind and kept battling until the very end but its Rathnew who went home with all three points after an impressive 8-0 victory.
