Wicklow Historical Society is hosting two lectures tonight (Wednesday).

On July 3 at 8 p.m. at Wicklow Sailing Club, Wicklow Historical Society in conjunctio­n with the Round Ireland Yacht Race Committee with present two free short lectures.

Society member Vincent O’Reilly will speak about the Wicklow schooner ‘Rockingham’ and the Edward’s family connection.

Vincent’s brother, Stan J. O’Reilly, will present a talk entitled ‘Messing about on the Water’. This will be an examinatio­n of the use of Wicklow Bay and the Vartry River from Pagan to Christian, Viking, Anglo-Norman, Conquest and Colonisati­on times onwards.

This will be a great insight into long maritime tradition in Wicklow. Both talks are dedicated to the memory of local historians Jimmy Cleary and Andrew O’Brien, who organised and conducted the first maritime series of walks and talks in Wicklow Town. Copies of the 2018 Wicklow Historical Society Journal are on sale now. This is another bumper issue packed with interestin­g articles and old photograph­s. Priced at just €5 it represents great value and is a delightful trip back into a Wicklow now long gone.
