HUNDREDS HIT THE WATER

Andrea Doyle and Carmel O’Toole cheering on Layla Hamrogue. A WARM but dull evening greeted swimmers taking to the waters as part of Wicklow Swimming Club’s mid-week swims held on Wednesday.

Twenty-Four Intermedia­tes competed for Chairman’s Cup with Stephen Bell finishing first, Usha Daly

O’Toole second and Joss Hulin third. Eighty-four seniors challenged for the Committee Cup. It was a tough race as the sea was extremely choppy. They navigated a course out of the harbour and into what some later described as a ‘washing machine’. Katie O’Neill came out on top, followed by Ruairi Farrell in second and third placed Eve Cowdry.

There was a great turnout at Wicklow Harbour as 238 swimmers took part in Sunday morning’s races. The Junior sprints were up first with 67 swimmers competing.

The results were: Under 6 Boys – first, Tom Doyle, second, Dara Colohan, third, Elliott Kinsella; Under 6 Girls – first, Anna Kravchenko, second, Maria O’Dwyer, third, Olivia Guinan; Under 8 Boys – first, Daniel Sheridan, second, Eoin Treanor, third, Bill Guinan; Under 8 Girls – first, Ruth Connolly, second, Laura Bentley, second, Bella Redmond; Under 10 Boys – first, Robert Sheridan, second, Des Brennan, third, Oisin Kearney; Under 10 Girls – first, Eva Fitzpatric­k, second, Ali O’Neill, third, Mei Wilson-Ma; Under 12 Boys – first, Will Fitzpatric­k, second, Joss Hulin, third, John Aherne; Under 12 Girls – first, Aisling Casey, second, Neasa Magillacud­dy, third, Cara Hatton; Under 14 Boys – first, Finn Fitzpatric­k; Under 14 Girls – first, Aisling Ledesma, second, Moya Kelly, third, Ellie Mae Brennan.

Thirty-six juniors were back in the water in the junior challenge for the Kenny Cup. First home was Laya Hamrogue, Will Fitzpatric­k was second and Abi Copeland was third.

Twenty-seven intermedia­tes swam for the Coello Cup, sponsored by the Sheekey family. Leanna Bell won the race, with Sienna Brennan in second and Andre Kravchenko finishing third.

Eleven youths competed for the BC Sports Cup. Lily Devitt was the winner, followed by Mia Kristianse­n second and Robyn Brennan third.

Ninety-seven seniors swam for the Rocky Newsome Memorial Cup. Gary Morton Jnr took first place with Aimee Brennan taking second and Hazel Behan in third.

On Sunday, July 22, racing for the juniors will start with the Conway Cup (sponsored by the Vize family) followed by the Flood Bay relay for the Seniors.

The second of Wicklow Swimming Club’s Open swims will take place on Friday, July 20, with the Healy O’Kane Open. The gents’ race will start at 7 p.m. followed by the ladies’ race at 7.45 p.m.
