Concerns raised over the amount of liability claims

-

CLLR John Snell raised alarm over the number of public liability claims made against Wicklow Municipal District.

Eight claims were recently made against the district, with around 50 per cent of those involving small claims due to vehicle damage.

Cllr Snell highlighted the number of false injury claims which have been reported on nationally over the last few months.

‘I am startled that we have between eight and ten claims in our own district and that is probably reciprocated throughout the county,’ said Cllr Snell. ‘I would have concerns. Something that has come to public attention are the number of people who have been ousted as regular claimants. Some lost their memories and had no recollections of previous claims and were shown the door by the judge. They have a history and a very luxurious lifestyle through the claims they make. If cases brought against us aren’t clear cut, then I would like to see them contested’.

District Manager Brian Gleeson said the Wicklow District didn’t receive a greater number of claims than other parts of the county.

‘We wouldn’t be greater than the norm compared to other towns of similar size,’ said Mr Gleeson.

IPB Insurance had also provided a map of all the potential hot-spots for claims in Wicklow town so repair works can be carried out.
