Tullow show success for sheep breeders

TULLOW Sheep Breeders Associatio­n held their annual pairs night recently which was a great success with over 22 pairs of ewe lambs and over 20 pairs of Suffolk-cross hogget ewes presented for showing.

The Cheviot classes were also strongly supported on the night.

The evening showcased all that is good and exceptiona­l about the Suffolk Cheviot cross breeding with the Suffolk ram and the Wicklow Cheviot being the maternal strengths to the breed.

The Sheep Breeders’ Committee noted that they were preparing for their 31st annual show and sale in Tullow. It’s a tremendous success for any breed society to be building and showcasing 31 years of sheep production in the the south east of Ireland.

The winners were as follows: Best Pair of Suffolk Cheviot x Ewe Lambs – first, Laurence Murphy, second, David and Dylan Leybourne, third, Peter Behan, fourth Sean Ryan. Best Pair of Suffolk Cheviot x Hoggett Ewes – first, Ben Fenton, second, David and Dylan Leybourne, third, David and Dylan Leybourne, fourth John Driver. Best Pair of Cheviot Ewe Lambs: first, John Driver, second, Charles Fenton, third, Laurence Murphy. Best Pair of Cheviot Hogget Ewes – first, Peter Behan, second, David and Dylan Leybourne, third, John Driver.

Chairman John Nolan thanked all the exhibitors for bringing sheep on the evening to the show and also reminded the people that entries were now open for the 31st show and sale which takes place on Wednesday, August 8, in Tullow Mart and also that the second show and sale for the year will be held on Wednesday, August 29, and the third sale, on Wednesday, September 12. This will include the Cheviot Show and Sale.

Tullow Sheep Breeders Associatio­n extends its thanks to all their sponsors who have supported them over the years and are continuing their sponsorshi­p for the year ahead.

A total of 268 cattle and 22 calves on offer. Trade remains similar as per the last number of weeks.
