MEN’S SHED

Many thanks to all you very generous people who came out to our Open day last Saturday the 21st to again show your goodwill and support for the Men’s Shed venture.

we were only to glad to have all you over, to show what we are capable of project wise, for our community as a whole, while at the same time supplying a solution to needs within that community. We can honestly say your ever obliging generosity towards the Men’s Shed makes it all very worthwhile, thank you.

Pat’s on the back to, Newcastle Design (kitchen units and fitting) Parkview Hotel (Barby), All our dearest lady bakers), James Carroll (delph) and to all who made the day memorable once again, we are in your debt always.

Sunflower judging takes place next week and competitio­n is very tense this year for result have a look at Facebook page this coming week. It is also hoped to start a ‘Walk football team’ to compete with other sheds so members wishing to be considered place name on notice board. Enjoy the sunshine, and be well.

GAA CLUB NOTES

Newtown seniors had another disappoint­ing loss against Blessingto­n in the championsh­ip last Saturday, it was hard luck for the lads who gave it their all and got the score line back to within three points close to the final whistle however Blessingto­n scored a second goal leaving final result of 2-6 to 2-12. The next championsh­ip fixture is scheduled for Aughrim, 2 p.m. Sunday the fifth against St Pat’s, if would be great to see a big crowd and give the lads full support.

The under-9s all performed well at a recent blitz in Bray and they all had a great evening. Their next blitz is on August 10 in Rathnew.

Training continues every Monday at 6.30 p.m. give Alun a bell at 086 3017500 for more informatio­n. The under-13s had a great win away from home against at Pat’s recently and their next outing is tonight at home to Tinahely.

Training continues every Monday at 6.30 p.m. for the under-11s and at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday for the under-13s. The under-15s are due to play Tinahely at home on Friday.

All our juvenile teams are always looking for more players and volunteers so if you want to get involved with any aspect with either a boys or girls’ team give our secretary Tom a buzz at 087 6611480. The under-eight_u10 girls are training on Tuesdays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-12 girls have been training away in preparatio­n for the championsh­ip, they train twice a week on Tuesdays and Friday at 6.30 p.m. Training for the under-14 girls continues on Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.,they are in a championsh­ip group with Bray Emmet’s and St Pat’s, the first match is away to Bray in the first week of August.

All membership is now overdue and as we are operating a strictly no pay no play policy it is advisable to please pay ASAP as the deadline has long passed.

Newtown lotto is a whopping €9k, numbers drawn last week were 1, 10, 12 and 17, if you’re not in you can’t win. Tickets only €2.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Last weekend the WDSL Academy under-10 and under-12 teams took part in fourteam tournament­s. The 10’s won their competitio­n by getting the better of Terenure on penalties in the final. Well done to Kacey Kelly from our club who plays on this team. Well done to the 12’s as well who played some lovely football on the day but narrowly missed out on the final. Hannah Martin and Keira Farrelly from our club play on this team. Well done to all three girls and keep up the good work.

Just some informatio­n regards when all our teams will resume there on field action after the summer break. Under-eights, 9s and 10s will return the weekend of September 9 and fixtures will be set till weekend 17th/November 18. Where Leagues finish early (as in end of Sept, start of Oct) the WDSL will look at a shield competitio­n for these age groups.

Our under-12s (players born in 2006) are back in training from this Thursday, August 2, starting at 7 p.m.

All Fixtures Competitiv­e and Non-Trophy will finish weekend of November 17/18, followed by the WDSL Awards, Presentati­on Day in the Parkview Hotel Sunday, November 25 (details times etc to follow in October). The under-11s website has been updated with Champions League Groups (Format) Fixtures Set for Group Stages, four groups in each, top two in each group into Cup Quarter Finals, Bottom two in each group into Plate Quarter Finals. Group Stages will be Home and away Q/F, S/F and Finals winner on the day. (WDSL will look to run finals on neutral grounds)

The WDSL will be hosting/running a number of invitation­al tournament­s for different age groups over the summer and the details are as follows: Weekend of August 11/12: under-eights/9s Blitz Tournament and under-10s/11s Blitz Tournament (Both seven aside) Celtic Park Arklow. Weekend of August 18/19: under-14/15 Tournament Players Born 2004/2003 (Whitegates/Finlay Park Wicklow). The WDSL will be Inviting DDSL teams, Carlow teams and Wexford teams to enter, there will be a limited number of places available so if interested clubs must put forward their interest sooner rather than later.

Congratula­tions to ex-Junior Cian Walsh, who made his senior debut for Bray Wanderers as a second half sub in the 3-1 defeat at home to Cork City last Friday night. Well done Cian, first of many I hope.

Newtown Juniors will hope to run their popular Mini World Cup competitio­ns in the lead up to the restart of the WDSL season.

There are also a couple of slots on all our teams at the moment so if there are any girl’s or boys who would like to join the club please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653 and he will provide you with all the informatio­n you will require.

Everyone at Newtown Juniors FC would like to extend their sincere condolence­s to the family and friends of Amanda Gilbert, who sadly passed away recently. May she rest in peace.

CARLINGFOR­D OUTING

There will be a day outing to Carlingfor­d cruise and Mourne mountain tour on Friday, August 31. Pick up Roundwood Parish Hall 9.30 a.m. Tea and Scones in the Nalley Inn Dunleer. Visit Carlingfor­d town, depart Carlingfor­d to Greenore Port. Ferry crossing from Greenore to Greencastl­e across Carlingfor­d Lough. Tour of Mourne mountains, Rostrevor, Hilltown and Newry for shopping. Evening meal in the Nally Inn Dunleer and home. Total cost €65 per person. MONEYSTOWN DANCE

The Wicklow Man will play in Moneystown Community Centre on Friday, August 10, from 9.30 p.m. till midnight. Tea served, refreshmen­ts also available asnd door prizes. Come along and enjoy a night of waltzing, jive linedancin­g etc. The Wicklow Man will also playon Friday, September 14.

PATTERN DAY

The annual Pattern Day Walk from Moneystown Community Centre to Lady’s Well Ballymanus Upper on Carrick Mountain will take place Sunday, August 19, leaving Moneystown at 6 p.m. The route is five and a half miles in total (good walking shoes recommende­d and no dogs allowed). Suitable for older children accompanie­d by adults. The route is along the road and then on Coillte roads.

Lady’s well is an ancient holy well that is marked on the Neville Maps of 1760 as an important site. The well was rediscover­ed in 2013 and there has been a walk every year on or close to the original pattern day August 15.

There will be a short talk on the history and traditions of the holy wells and also relevant local history. If you want to play music, read a poem or sing a song feel free to join in as singing, dancing etc were all part of the traditions of pattern days and visits to the well. There will be refreshmen­ts after the walk in Moneystown Community Centre.

NATURE WALKS

Join the Wicklow Mountains National Park Guides on a children’s nature walk at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays in July and August to explore various aspects of the National Park. Suitable for all age groups. An adult must stay with their children and be prepared to join in. No booking or charges apply. Meet at the Informatio­n Office near the Upper Lake in Glendaloug­h.

Topics to be covered include:, Wednesday, July 25: Birds, Wednesday, August 1: Trees, Wednesday, August 8: Bugs, Wednesday, August 15: Mammals, Wednesday, August 22: History.

ROUNDWOOD FESTIVAL

Plans are well under way for the return of the much loved Roundwood Festival 2018 running from Thursday, August 2, to Sunday, August 5. So keep these dates free and keep an eye on this space for more details of what’s on and where.

The Roundwood Active Retirement holiday will take place from the Monday, September 24, till the Friday, September 28, to the Tara Hotel in Waterford. Anyone interested should pay their deposit to Betty or Molly before July 1.

OUR LADY’S ISLAND

There will be a pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Island on Sunday, August 19, leaving Roundwood at 10 a.m. from the Parish Hall. Cost is €65 per person which includes the bus, scones and dinner. Money and names to Susan at 087 76273032 before August 1.
