Swimmers tackle the elements for mid-week events

SOME rotten weather conditions greeted participan­ts in Wicklow Swimming Club’s mid-week swim held on Wednesday with the swimmers having to cope with heavy rain and wind.

The sea was choppy as thirteen Youths took to the water first to compete for the O’Donovan Cup. First was Emma Waters, while Sarah Flood was second and Abby Horner finished third.

76 Seniors braved the elements to compete in a sealed handicap for the Base2Race Cup. The gents winner was Keith Bentley followed by Jia Ma and Remi Baltrusait­is. The ladies event was won by Emer Kelly. Hana Blake was second and Sarah Doyle was third.

A fantastic two hundred and nineteen swimmers took to the water to compete on Sunday morning August 5 in glorious morning with perfectly calm sea conditions at Wicklow Harbour.

The Junior sprints were up first with 59 swimmers competing in the following races; Under 6 Boys: first Tom Doyle, second Ted Jameson, third Jasper Baltrusait­is. Under 6 Girls: first Olivia Guinan, second Aoife Quinn, third Maria O’Dwyer. Under 8 Boys: first Tristan McKeever, second Daniel Sheridan, third Bill Guinan. Under 8 Girls: first Saorla Hartley, second Ruth Connolly, third Laura Bentley. Under 10 Boys: first Matthew Mooney, second Ryan Quinn, third Ben Fry. Under 10 Girls: first Sadhbh Hartley, second Aoibhinn Hartley, third Eva Fitzpatric­k. Under 12 Boys: first Will Fitzpatric­k, second John Aherne, third Jacob Fry. Under 12 Girls: first Ella Kelly, second Cara McKenna, third Layla Fitzpatric­k.

Twenty Eight juniors were back in the water swimming the Junior Challenge for the Watson Cup; Boys: first Bill Guinan, second Robert Sheridan, third Oisin Kearney. Girls: first Holly Kinsella, second Sadhbh Hartley, third Ruby Eager-Mooney

Twenty Intermedia­tes swam for the Earls Cup; first Jill Connolly, second Niamh Waters, third Hazel Bentley.

Twelve Youths competed for the Drennan Cup. first Aimee Bell King, second Olivia O’Donovan, third Bonnie Bell King.

One hundred seniors swam in perfect conditions for the Borgman Earls Cup, first Stella Farrell, second Joe Healy, third Sharon Vize.

The next mid-week races for the Seniors will take place today, Wednesday, August 8, at 7.15 p.m.. On Saturday, August 11, at 11.15 a.m. the seniors will compete for the Fitzpatric­k and Regatta Cups at the Club Vartry. On Sunday, August 12, racing will start races start at 10.15 a.m. for the Junior Sprints, 10.30 a.m. for the Junior Challenge for the Fry Cup, 11 a.m. for the Mark Dunne Memorial Cup, 11.30 a.m. for the youths race and 12 noon for the seniors race for the Brennan Cup.
