Major games this weekend
Rathnew to face Kiltegan
IT’S another busy weekend on the local club scene in Wicklow with a number of crunch ties down for decision across a range of championships.
Pick of the weekend has to be the meeting of Rathnew and Kiltegan in the Renault Senior Football Championship Group 2 on Sunday evening at 7pm in Joule Park Aughrim.
Trevor Doyle’s men are sitting pretty on top of the group and will be relishing the chance to exact some revenge for the defeat to Harry Murphy’s men last year.
Rathnew took care of Avondale in their opening game but met their match in Hollywood at the weekend and a draw was the result after a thoroughly entertaining clash so a win in their third fixture would be most welcome for the Village side.
The aforementioned Hollywood have a very important game against Bray Emmets on Saturday in the county grounds at 6.30pm. Mick Murray’s men are only one point above Bray after two games and will not want to slip up against the northern outfit and allow them to leapfrog them in the group.
A superb game of football is in the pipeline in the opening game in Joule Park Aughirm on Saturday at 5pm when Baltinglass and AGB meet in Group 1. AGB produced a stunning comeback to draw with Blessington last weekend, while Baltinglass finished strongly against Annacurra to leave them third in the group behind St Pat’s and Blessington.
Newtown and Annacurra will meet in Pearse’s Park with the prize of not being bottom on offer after the 7pm throw-in.
Some tasty Intermediate games on offer as well. Dunlavin get back on the field following the tragic loss of Louis Caplis when they face Kilmac in roundwood while Laragh and Carnew promises plenty of drama in the county grounds at 5pm on Sunday ahead of the Rathnew v. Kiltegan Senior clash.
There’s a staggered double header in Pearse’s Park on Sunday. Ballinacor and high-flying Tinahely throws in at 1pm while the second game gets underway at 5pm between Ashford and Ballymanus where Paddy Molloy’s men will hope to maintain winning ways with a win over a potentially depleted Ashford side depending on the findings of the CCC in the aftermath of the brawl that occurred during the clash with Rathnew in Aughrim last weekend.
In Baltinglass at 7pm, revived Stratford-Grangecon take on Coolkenno at 7pm.
