Kilmacanogue
BLESSING OF THE GRAVES
The annual blessing of the graves in Kilmacanogue will take place on Sunday, August 19, at 3 p.m. As always, it will begin in the Old Graveyard and then up to the new cemetery. Please make every effort to tidy up a grave that might not have someone to look after it in close proximity of your own loved ones.
HORSE SHOW SUCCESS
After a long, hot, dry summer, it was hard to believe the rain that fell as the 45th Kilmacanogue Horse Show began. But the Kilmacangue Horse Show people and volunteers are tough, all-weather souls and soon the car parks were full of animal trailers and the boisterous sounds of competitors getting ready for their classes. The worst of the weather was over before the show began when a watery sun appeared and stayed all day.
The usual wonderful mix of people and animals were all there on the Saturday. Humans of all ages and ability, teamed up with horses, ponies, donkeys, sheep, dogs and geese to perform at their best. Half the human competitors were children, aged from three-to-five-year olds in the ‘Obedient Pony’ class to cool teenagers showing off their ‘Style and Appearance’. Judges were kept busy picking winners from strong competition in each class.
Besides the horses, there were competitions to find the best among the renowned Wicklow sheep, the friendliest dog show in Ireland took place also where every kind of dog was welcomed. Wonderful displays included international Polo Cross players demonstrating how ball-to-lacrosse co-ordination which is shared by riders and their ex-racehorses. A parade of carriages from times-gone-by made up the finale. Everyone was tired out and happy after a day that went very well and where all money raised will go to support local charities.
Now that August is here, the Bobby Messett Memorial golf classic is drawing closer and will take place on Friday the 24th in Charlesland Golf Club. This will be a relaxed 4-member Scramble and is at a cost of €240 per team which includes Green fees, Prizes and a meal after in Plucks with music on the night.
All Tee Times are now fully booked up but if you cannot make it, a Tee Box Sponsor would be greatly appreciated at €100 and please contact Liam Finnerty to arrange same at 086 6074821. Charlesland Golf Club have been most generous with Green fees, Plucks have once again been excellent in their support and of course, everyone has been most generous to date.
GAA CHAMPIONSHIP
It’s a third Round Intermediate Championship match up next for Mark Kings troops. It will take place this Saturday in Roundwood with a throw in time of 5 p.m. After a narrow defeat to Coolkenno last Friday night in Arklow, Kilmacanogue really need a win in this one and it is hoped that a large crowd of supporters will travel up the road to Roundwood to cheer them on. Good luck lads.
CÚL CAMP

KING MEMORIAL MATCH
The annual Patrick and Fiona King Memorial match will take place at Ryders Field at 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 18. Once again, the game will feature friends that played with Patrick on both the Glencormac United and St Fergal’s teams and Fergals are attempting to make it 4-4 after pulling one back last year.
Although the game is in Ryders, St Fergal’s are the hosts this year and after the game it is back to the Wild Goose in Bray for presentation and a few stories to remember Patrick and Fiona, gone from our sights but not our hearts.
After a stack of mail (and giving out) that he wasn’t allowed say anything as joint manager of the Glens at the Bobby Messitt Charity match, Colm Griffith will take sole charge of the Glencormac Team and it will be interesting to see will ‘Our Coli’ step up the plate as his buddy Trevor Carr reckons its to be a step for him.
