- By MYLES BUCHANAN

WICKLOW County Council has plans to construct 67 social houses in Rathnew.

The planned accommodation will consist of 46 two-bed houses and 21 three-bed houses, all of which will be two storey.

Cllr John Snell, Chairman of the Housing SPC, feels the development will help cater to the large number of people on the waiting list, while also freeing up private rentals.

WICKLOW County Council is proposing to construct 67 social houses in Rathnew as the waiting list for local authority housing continues to grow.

The planned accommodation will consist of 46 two-bed houses and 21 three-bed houses, all of which will be two storey.

Cllr John Snell, Chairman of the Housing SPC, hopes the development will help cater to members of the public with social housing needs, while also freeing up some private rentals.

‘It’s wonderful news that there are plans for 67 social houses in Rathnew and hopefully some affordable housing at a later stage.

‘I know Wicklow County Council has put a lot of work into the lands in question so they are more or less ready to go. You have a lot of people who have been on the housing waiting list for quite some time. Once the development is constructed it should help free up some space in the private rental sector as most of the tenants who will move into the social housing would currently be renting privately’.

The local authority has a number of different social housing projects under development, while the county council will also receive a ten per cent allocation from any private estates or developments currently under construction.

‘There are a number of exciting projects coming on stream that can’t happen quick enough,’ said Cllr Snell.

‘Cluid are working alongside Wicklow County Council over 45 houses in Ballybeg, Rathnew. There are seven other social houses in Rathnew and some people will be collecting their keys this week. Three of the seven houses on the Marlton Road in Wicklow town were allocated this week. In October, we expect the first keys to be handed out regarding 20 social units being constructed in Rathdrum’.

Submissions or observations over the 67 houses in Rathnew can be made in writing to David Porter, Administrative Officer, Housing Section of Wicklow County Council on or before Monday, September 24.
