RESIDENTS WANT DUMPING CRACKDOWN
RESIDENTS in Dunlavin were disgusted to find white goods illegally dumped in their community, just weeks after a free collection day was organised in town.
The dumping was detected near Churchill estate in recent days but, as it was on private property, the landowner was left to clean it up at their own expense.
According to a spokesperson for Dunlavin Residents’ Association, which represents Chapel View, Churchill and Sparrow Road, this type of dumping is a persistant problem and must be addressed by the authorities.
‘Illegal dumping is an ongoing problem but mainly in the private field to the back of the Churchill estate. It is a complete eyesore to any members of the public visiting the ‘Green Hollow’ playground, as it is highly visible and gives an overall bad impression of Churchill estate, which is very unfair. There are fantastic residents that are fully supportive against dumping and totally disappointed and angry with the dumping being done by such a very small minority. This dumping not only giving a bad impression of the estate, it is also causing a serious concern over rats. Most importantly, there is livestock grazing on this land and at times eating through the rubbish,’ said a committee spokesperson.
The dumping comes just four weeks after a free electical goods clean up and recycling day was organised by the committee. Local fuel supplier of items that are fully recyclable,’ the spokesperson added.
The group has called for such dumping to be taken more seriously and for a clampdown to happen to ensure that further activity is deterred.
‘Dumping needs to be taken more seriously and fines issued to deter further dumping. The residents are calling on the relevant authorities to start clamping down on dumpers, these issues will not go away unless a clampdown starts happening from the necessary bodies.’
This most recent case has been reported to the gardaí and the Environmental Section at Wicklow County Council.
