Rovers roar past opposition

-

THE Lions Youth Football Championship hosted by Wicklow and District Lions Club saw Wicklow Rovers face off against Limavady Youths last Tuesday evening.

The All-Ireland tournament is sanctioned by the FAI and its purpose is to promote ‘Lionism’ through youth sports and to raise awareness amongst the younger generation about the great work carried out by Lions Clubs throughout Ireland.

The first half proved a hard fought battle, with both teams coming close to scoring on several occasions.

The Limavady keeper Fintan McIVor was in fine form and kept Rovers at bay more than once in the opening half.

Limavady began to apply some pressure on Rovers in the second half, with the home side’s goalie pulling off some remarkable stops.

As Limavady pushed forward, Rovers broke away and scored the first goal of the match. Limavady tried hard to reply and pushed forward, leaving space for Rovers to exploit.

The eventual 5-0 scoreline was hard on the Northern visitors and wasn’t necessarily a fair reflection on the flow of the game.

Fintan McIvor was awarded the Man-of the-Match award.

The final will be played in the hallowed grounds of Dalymount Park. Wicklow Lions members are very proud to be part of this tournament and thank all involved for making it such an overwhelming success.
