Ceremony in memory of Cpl Michael Nolan

THE Seventh annual remembranc­e and wreath laying ceremony for Cpl Michael Nolan takes place at Oliver Plunket’s Church, Grangecon this Saturday.

Michael was killed 57 years ago on September 15 in Elizabethv­ille. He is one two men from Wicklow to die in the Congo, the other was Mick McGuinn from Baltinglas­s.

Saturdays ceremony takes place on the exact date of Cpl Nolan’s death. It is being hosted by Post 21, Irish United Nations Veterans Associatio­n (IUNVA) and gets underway at 12.15 p.m.

Corporal Nolan grew up in nearby Colbinstow­n and went to school in Grangecon National School, now the Community Hall.

Michael’s extended family, friends and ex comrades will be in attendance. Members of Post 21 will also be joined by other IUNVA posts. The day will include an ecumenical service and a wreath laying ceremony.
