Taekwon-do four do well at world championships
AN Arklow teenager was among those being honoured last week as the Wexford Irish International Taekwon-Do Federation held a celebration night to mark the achievements of four of its members at the World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The four fighters, who range in age from 15 up to 27 years, enjoyed medal success at the competition, which took place in August, welcoming over 800 competitors from more than 32 countries. All four competitors have numerous national and international medals to their name already. Team Ireland had 30 competitors from around the country taking part.
The four Wexford club members were Oisin Byrne, Mark Henebery, Neil Gordon, and Jana Galinski, all of whom trained under instructor and coach, Master Michael Flaherty, who was a gold, silver and bronze medalist at the European Games in Naples in 2011 and a silver medalist at the World Championships in Brighton in 2016.
Oisin (16), is from Arklow but does his training in Wexford. He won a I degree bronze medal in the junior team sparring.
Neil (16), a student in St Peter’s College, also took home a I degree bronze medal for junior team sparring.
Mark (15), also a student at St Peter’s College, won a II degree bronze medal in the Under 18 individual patterns, as well as a bronze medal in the junior team sparring.
Jana Galinski (27) from Crossabeg, a taekwon-do instructor in Wexford and Enniscorthy with over 20 years of experience, won a V degree silver medal in adult female individual patterns.
