TY INDUCTION DAY

Tuesday last saw our transition year students head to Well’s House in Wexford for their induction day. This induction day is a traditional one in our TY calendar and provides an opportunity for all our TY students to get to know each other in a fun and relaxed environment. The students thoroughly enjoyed their action packed day of archery in the woods. Thanks to Ms Merrigan, Mr O’Gorman and Pauline for accompanying the boys.

TRANSITION YEAR AHEAD

Once again our transition year students are in for an extremely full and diverse year of trips, activities and programmes. Next week will see them participate in a special effects make up course where they are sure to pick up some tips for Halloween. Soon after it’s on to Baltinglass for an overnight adventure and then to driving school. These are but a few of the exciting things planned for them for the year ahead.

GAELIC FOOTBALL TRAINING

Gaelic football training resumes in Pearse Park on Tuesday afternoon at 3.30 for our first year students and at 4.00 for our second year students. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in our extra-curricular activities.

JUNIOR CERT RESULTS

Junior Certificate results are imminent and as always the students expecting their results will be treated to a day away from school to take their minds off their impending results. HIGHER OPTIONS

under way Our new batch of TY’s have wasted no time in getting stuck into all the new opportunities that they are presented with. It has been a very busy week for the students as they embark on there new modules. Scones in Bake off, The sugar Loaf summit in adventure sports, Mosaic design and restoration and even a fantastic one man play “God has no Country” by Donal Courtney in tutorial. As well as all this, they are busily catching up with their academic subjects after a long summer of sun, swimming and socialising!

The year have shown tremendous positivity so far and are throwing themselves into each class and unit with open minds, one hopes that this will be a characteristic carried through the rest of the academic year.

To help maintain their focus they are already looking forward to their first two trips, Djouce hill walk to celebrate their JC results next week and the now annual homage up to the ploughing match in Tullamore. Gaelic and camogie We wish the students well and hope they’ll have a happy and rewarding time in St Mary’s College.

STEM TALK

Our Form 2 students were delighted to welcome Professor Arlene Gallagher to St Mary’s College today. Professor Gallagher of TCD School of Physics gave a talk on girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and maths) and also spoke about the Trinity Walton Club-a STEM club for post primary students interested in how STEM works in the world around them. Some of the girls who are interested in the Walton club sat the club’s entrance assessment test on Saturday. Best of luck, girls.

TY’S SEA-SING THE DAY

The new TY group made a kickstart to their upcoming year with a day trip to Brittas Bay beach which doubled as their Induction day on August 29. The day began with a meeting with the TY co-ordinator, Ms Ryan along with other teachers who will play a key role in this year’s TY group, Ms Hempenstall, Ms Kelleher and Ms Molloy.

The students were given information regarding their upcoming Gaisce Hike, along with their locker numbers and journals. Following this, students were allowed time to have a quick lunch before heading off in two buses to the beach. When they arrived, they were greeted with glorious weather, prompting many of the girls to make the effort to get into to the sea for a swim. Other students relaxed on the warm sand getting to know one another and catching up after the summer. Even a few teachers were spotted having a swim. The time that all students were anxiously anticipating soon came, where the group would be split up into the four class groups, 4 Gregory, 4 Enright, 4 O’Brien and last but not least 4 Boland.

In a non-traditional way that promoted teamwork among the girls, they worked together to find their classmates which was enjoyed by all. Overall, the day was a huge success which gave a very positive insight into the year ahead.
