MARY MCGRATH R.I.P.

Kilmurray and Kilmacanogue community lost a real queen last week when the sad news was announced that Mary McGrath had passed away peacefully after a long and brave battle against illness.

Mary (née Phillips) was surrounded by her family, in the loving care of the staff at St Vincent’s University Hospital. She was predeceased by her siblings Betty, Seán and Charlie and will be remembered with love by her husband Jim, children Eddie, Angela (Sinnott), Debbie (Porter), and Anthony; sisters Eileen, Kay, Emmy, Joan and Monica, brothers Frank, Ben and Pat; daughters-in-law Bernie and Catríona, sons-in-law Glenn and Seán, grandchildren Jamie, Ciara, Matthew, Khyle, Alannah, Jonah, Alison, Shane, Conor, Darragh and Emma, brothers-in-law, sistersin-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She reposed at her home on Friday evening where a constant stream of mourners called to pay a final farewell and express their sadness. Her removal place on Saturday morning to St Mochonog’s Church, Kilmacanogue for Funeral Mass followed by burial in adjoining cemetery where once again a large crowd gathered.

A wonderful family woman, Mary was quiet a character and loved having the banter on nights out, always first up on the dance floor. I hope all the Philips family will not mind me saying but Mary was the really the head of the clan and kept everyone in touch and that was borne out by the massive present of siblings and nieces and nephews that travelled over from the UK to bid farewell. There were lovely tributes paid on Saturday for this wonderful lady but none more fitting than the one her daughter Angela read out which was written by Edgar A Guest and titled a ‘The Mothers Watch’.

Mary, your suffering is over but you have left us all with great memories of a wonderful lady, rest in peace.

CLUBHOUSE OPENING

Well the big day finally arrived on Sunday and what a proud day it was for the members of Kilmacanogue GAA Club as their new Clubhouse was officially opened. There was a series of games played at all juvenile levels, a super ladies’ team featured and then the seniors mixed with adults with beautiful medals presented on the day to mark the occasion for all participants.

This clubhouse is certainly something for all the members to be proud of and what an effort it took by the community to get to Sundays opening. Well done everyone at Kilmacanogue GAA Club.

SOCCER ACTION

The under-10s played a close game with St Anthony’s on Saturday morning, losing out on a 5-3 scoreline. The Glens three goals came from Luke Kelly, Seán Prendergast and Jude Leahy in a game that could have gone either way. Seán Sweeney and Oisin Short put in great performances for the Glens.

The under-12s drew 2-2 with Ashford with the goals coming from Michael Prendergast and Daniel Moragahan. Glens led 1-0 and 2-1 which was similar to last week where they just didn’t take their chances and gave a goal away in the last minute. Man of the match for the Glens was right back Tony Prendergast in a good team display.

Glencormac United under-14s beat Greystones United 2-1 at home on Sunday morning with Oisin Kelly scoring both goals. The Glens went 1-0 up after 20 minutes when Oisin ran onto a through ball and went around the keeper and slotted the ball home. It stayed 1-0 at half time. In the second half, the Glens continued playing lovely football and then midway through the second half Oisin doubled the lead with a volley past the keeper but with 15 minutes left, Greystones let them in to pull one back. John Fox came on and tormented Greystones with his running and trickery and won a penalty with five minutes left, Oisin stepped up to take it but missed his chance for the hatrick. This was another super display by the whole squad.
