NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

All our teams had matches last weekend apart from the under-10s whose game away to Carnew fell victim to the heavy overnight rain.

The under-8s played away to Wicklow Rovers Blue and our teams proved too strong on the day. Among those that starred on the day were Colin Healy, Theo Messitt and Jack Gavin.

Our under-9s hosted St Patrick’s and despite a rather one sided game on one of the pitches in the first game the other seven games were much much closer. On the day Albie Chance, Jack Barlow and Alex Ryan starred.

It was another narrow victory for the under-11s as they edged out Enniskerry White away by 4-3. Jake Robertson scored another treble and Brooklyn Doyle also scored in a good team display.

It was another even game for the under-12s as they hosted Avonmore B and it was a late goal in the second half that gave the away side all three points in a 1-0 win. For Newtown it was a day where they had good possession but too often the final pass in the attacking third was missing. Edward Valentine, Iggy Szpilka and Jamie Fitzgerald were among those who tried hard for the home side.

Arklow Town arrived in Newtown looking for a win to secure the Division 1 league title and after a titanic game full of goals and drama they got the required three points.

We congratulate Arklow on their league win and commend our team for making sure that if Arklow were going to win it they had to earn it. Our team can take a lot of positives from the game but they will also know that they need to improve on a few things. On the day we had six different goalscorers namely, Bogdan Rusu, Ryan Clarke, Luke Breen, Charlie Sullivan, Bobby Dowling and Shane Dunleavy. There will be a report on the game in Striker Evening Herald on Monday.

The following are the fixtures for the weekending Saturday/ Sunday, September 15/16: Academy Team away to St Patrick’s, ko to be confirmed; under-8s away to Greystones Yellow, ko to be confirmed; under-9s away to Arklow Town White, ko to be confirmed; under-10s away to Avonmore FC, ko to be confirmed; under-11s at home to Enniskerry White, ko to be confirmed; under-12s – Fixture to be confirmed; under-14s – Fixture to be confirmed (fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

All fixtures, competitive and non-Trophy will finish weekend of 17th/November 18, followed by the WDSL Awards, Presentation Day in the Parkview Hotel Sunday, November 25 (details times etc to follow in Oct),

Well done to our coaches and parents who attended the FAI PDP Workshop last Tuesday in the community centre. Many thanks to the RDO Ritchie Fitzgibbon and his two helpers Jim and Seán for their assistance on the night.

All players and parents from the club will receive a pocket sized copy of all the different formats of the game within the PDP that their child/children are likely playing and if anyone has any questions regards the same please forward them to the secretary.

Our ever-popular Development Squad started back last Saturday and will continue every weekend from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. and new players are welcome. The cost is €2 per head. The WDSL would like to run an Academy/Development Squad league from September 15 to November 18 in preparation for the under-8s season in February 2019. This venture would be open to players born in 2011/2012 only and would require among other things recruiting a couple more volunteer coaches.

We have had some interest in folk wanting their children to play and while we welcome all players’ please only sign your child up for this team only if you intend to commit to practise and matches for further information please contact the secretary.

This coming week we have four of our footballers celebrating a birthday and they are Amelia Lacey and Samuel Kearns from our Development Squad and Michael Synnott and Daniel Eager from the under-10s. Happy birthday guys from everyone in Newtown Juniors FC.

Our Last Man Standing competition will start back on September 29/October 1. 2018 and it’s our first one of the season. To enter it costs €10 per head and the more players we get the more money we can hand out. If interested in taking part please contact any committee member or coach in the club for further details. LMS Rules are posted on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

On a sadder note we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Nancy Cullen (Killadreenan) and Reverend Canon Robert Jennings (Newcastle) who both sadly passed away last weekend. May they rest in peace.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors FC please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook.
