‘It’s a tough job to pick 15’

IT is said that it takes a village to raise a baby. Well, Darragh Browne expects it’ll take his entire panel to lift the intermediate championship this weekend.

The Valleymount boss is without a couple of firstchoice players for their clash with St. Patrick’s but he is lucky to have 10 extremely capable deputies waiting in the wings and able to fill in for anyone.

Strength in depth may not be a problem for Browne but he thinks there may be a few anxious heads around the village this week which he hopes will be shaken off by throw-in.

“They’re all looking forward to it now but there’s a few nervous bodies. We’ll be okay. We’re missing one or two now but other than that we’re good to go. They’re fairly up for it anyway.

“We’ve a squad of 25 or 29 with a couple of very young girls added in. We’ve 25 there all well able to put in as good an effort as the next one. We’ve a big panel. It’s a tough job to pick 15!

“Everyone is up for it and we’re going out to win it. We’re well up for it, what more can I say? The girls are all well up for it. The whole club want the cup back. We’ll do everything we can to get the cup back.”

Browne won’t be cracking the whip over the next few days as he allows his side to rest in order to be ready for a side who he admits he isn’t overly knowledgeable about.

“This week, we’re going easy. We’ll go for two nights this week but last week we had three. It’ll be more tactics and that kind of craic this week. We’ll do some motivational speaking and that kind of craic - it’ll be nothing too strenuous this week!

“I don’t know too much about them but from what I’m hearing, they have a couple of good players there and I’ve been looking at Bill Hill and I see that they’re well up on the scoring record. We’ll be doing our best to keep them quiet. It’ll be a tough game. Hopefully it’ll be an enjoyable match to look at, we’ll see how things go.”

He won’t be able to control how his side feel on the day but he has no worries over their attitude or work-rate as he regularly finds himself blown away by the savage commitment and desire that comes pouring out of his side.

“They’ll be nervous but at the end of the day, these ladies fight and fight to the end. That’s the way they are. I haven’t seen a team like them, they’ll just dig it all out until the very end. They’ll keep firing until the very end from 1 to 20 or however many there is. We’ll always use every sub we have in every game so we need 20 players and they’ll give their all.”
