Arklow CBS
JC RESULTS
This Wednesday saw our students receive their Junior Certificate Results. Fabulous results were achieved by the boys and the school is very proud of them. This is testament to the hard work and study put in by the students’ themselves coupled with the support of their parents/guardians working alongside the hugely dedicated teaching staff of Arklow CBS.
JC RESULTS TRIP
As part of the celebration of the Junior Certificate results students awaiting their results were taken off for the day on what has become our annual hike in Glendalough. Students had a great but tiring day and the weather held beautifully. Many thanks to Mr Cosgrove, Ms Doyle, Mr Fanning, Mr O’Gorman and Pauline for accompanying the boys.
HIGHER OPTIONS EXPO
This Friday our sixth year students went to the Irish Times Higher Options event in the RDS This is Ireland’s largest college fair and expo for second-level students with more than 160 colleges, universities and institutes of further education from Ireland and across Europe represented. As many as 25,000 students are expected to attend the event this year as they prepare to make key decisions about what and where they will study upon completing the Leaving Cert. This expo is an extremely valuable part of the school year for our senior students. Thanks to Ms Whelan for organising and to Mary and Geraldine for their assistance in the run up to the trip.
TRIP TO CINEMA
This Friday saw our Third year History students go to the cinema to see the movie ‘Black 47’. This is a newly released film and the first one ever to be made about the Irish famine. The content of this film ties in exactly with the Junior History syllabus and students are sure to benefit greatly from seeing it. Students thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Thanks to Ms Cummins and Mr Cosgrove for organising it and bringing the students.
TY VOLUNTEERING TALK
Transition Year Students had a talk from County Wicklow Volunteer Centre with regard to getting involved in volunteering in the local community. TY students in the past have got involved with Tidy Towns Initiatives and with cleaning up some of Arklow’s beaches. Students have greatly benefited from volunteering and it is hoped that we can become involved this year in an even greater capacity.
Our TY students undertook a multi activity day in Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre recently. The weather was ideal and the students wholeheartedly entered into the team building spirit which the day was designed to foster. Morale was high as students encouraged each other. Activities on the day included Orienteering, Climbing Tower, Zipline, Archery andKayaking.
EQUESTRIAN SUCCESS
What a start to the season. A victory for our novice team combination of three first years Lillah Shaw, Hugh O’Loughlin and Emma Kinsella (in their first ever second level Interschools competition) and Katie Nolan, third year.
Thomas Devaney (fifth year) competed with Presentation Wexford in the open team class and jumped a double clear. Well done, all.
HIGHER OPTIONS
Sixth years had an early departure to the RDS on Thursday last for the annual Irish Times Higher Options Career Exhibition. It was a perfect opportunity for students to investigate college courses in Ireland, UK and within the EU. It was also great to meet former students Charlotte Hale and Emer Rose Kelly, who were student ambassadors.
Saturday, September 8, saw the inaugural Coláiste Chill Mhantáin golf classic take place in Wicklow Golf Club. This school fundraiser was developed to support the vast array of extracurricular activities running in the school. The day was hugely supported by local businesses and suppliers of the school which resulted in sponsorship for all tee boxes. With the weather holding well, we had twenty four teams tee off in both GUI and NON GUI team competitions.
There was no shortage of super prizes for both GUI and non-GUI teams and other prizes include a four ball in many local golf courses. Along with the golf classic that day, there was a monster raffle with over 30 prizes held in the school the following week.
Also, a big thank you to Wicklow Golf Club, who couldn’t have been more helpful in both the build up to the event and on the day itself. Support for the event was fantastic and the school would like to sincerely thank all those who played, helped organise, sponsored or donated raffle prizes.
Results: GUI Team Competition – first: Score 98 Team Tim Thornton. Second: Score 91 Team Ciaran Lally (on back 9). Third: Score 91 Team Sonny Cowman.
Non-GUI Competition – first: Score 91 Team Eoin McCarthy. Second: Score 88 Team Centra Ashford. Third: Score 83 Team Maurice Sheehy. The Longest Drive: Eugene Murphy. Nearest the Pin: Johnny Nolan.
BREAKFAST CLUB
Coláiste Chill Mhantáin’s Evening Study programme offers a quiet, supervised space within the school environment, where a student won’t be disrupted.
This is of huge benefit to all students to assist with their individual learning and completion of school related tasks. The fact that supervised evening study takes place four evenings a week for the school year means that students gain the advantage of developing a good routine regarding doing their homework and study. By being present in the same surroundings as their peers, students feel the support and connection to peers who are engaged in the same activity.
Study in Term one begins on Monday, September 10, and ends on Wednesday, December 19.
Evening study will not take place on the following dates due to Parent-Teacher Meetings etc. Tuesday, September 18, Tuesday, October 2, Tuesday, October 9, Thursday, October 18, Tuesday, October 23, Monday, November 5, Tuesday, November 20, Monday, December 3, Monday, December 10, Wednesday, December 12.
