Irish Dancing classes aree ongoing on Wednesdays for beginners/intermediate in St Mary and St Gerard’s from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The well established Fogarty classes continue on Saturdays in Parochial Hall at 10 a.m.

Congratulations Lara Gillespie: Congratulations to Lara Gillespie, a former pupil of Powerscourt National School, on her gold medal win in the Junior Women’s Points race at the track cycling European Championships held in Aigle, Switzerland, recently. Earlier in the Championships Lara achieved a silver medal in the individual pursuit during which she set a new Irish record.
ST MARY’S CHURCH
Important Notice: St Mary’s Church is being painted this month. Proposed Parish Assembly: Before the summer Fr Bernard met with parish communities in St Mochonog’s and in Ballyorney/Cookstown/Eagle Valley/ Enniskerry Demesne/Tinnahinch to seek views on issues that as a parish, and faith community, we need to address.
Fr Bernard’s intention to hold similar meetings for other areas of the parish has now been overtaken by a request from Archbishop Martin, as a follow up to the World Meeting of families and the visit of Pope Francis, that every parish in the diocese organise a Parish Assembly, come up with a vision for the future, and report back to him.
In his letter to parish priests the Archbishop poses a number of questions for consideration: ‘Where do we go forward now in the challenge of renewing the faith we carry in our own hearts and renewing the life of the church?’; ‘Which aspects of our dominant culture make it harder for people to understand the message of Jesus?’; ‘Why are we no longer captivating the hearts of our young people with the message of Jesus Christ? Can we teach them to pray?’; ‘How can our parishes respond to these challenges?’
A considerable part of last Tuesday week’s Parish Pastoral Council meeting, the first of 2018/19, was taken up with discussion of these challenges and how we might best meet the Archbishop’s request. We have commenced our initial planning, with a November date in mind, and will keep you informed. In the meantime, we encourage you to begin to think about these and related issues, and to pray for the success of this important initiative – Your Parish Pastoral Council.

Meetings of the Enniskerry History Society extend their best wishes to Michael Kelliher, who retired from Bray Library recent, for long and happy retirement. Lectures of the Enniskerry History Society resume in October when the autumn 2018 programme will commence and details will be announced shortly.

Opening hours for the library which is located on Church Road, Enniskerry, are – Tuesday and Friday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., and Saturday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New members to the library are always very welcome. MEALS ON WHEELS
The Meals on Wheels service which operates in Enniskerry and Kilmacanogue, delivers hot meals every Tuesday and Thursday to older people in their homes. It’s an opportunity to connect with the community and provide a hot meal and social contact call to older people in the area.
We are looking for volunteer drivers who can give up two or three hours twice a month to facilitate this much needed service. Interested volunteers should contact Maoiliosa Kelly at 086 8322466 for further information.
VICTORIAN FESTIVAL
The festival kicked off on Friday night, September 7, with a truly wonderful evening of music, with warm up act Craic ‘N’ Roll, followed by the fantastic Bagatelle.
Sunday, September 9, dawned a little bit grey and drizzly but soon cleared to lovely autumn sunshine. Joan O’Conner arrived to present the Donal O’Connor Memorial trophy. The inaugural Trophy has been introduced for the first EVFD Soap Box Derby which was a terrific success and was won by a delighted Ben Doran.
The Tug’ O’War saw the Rocky’s from Cavan, Ballinastoe team from Wicklow, the Mighty Oaks from Kilkenny, and Castlegregory from Tipperary take part in which the Rockys won the pull, with Ballinastoe in second place. Then two members from each team came together to compete against the Mighty Lakers. Lakers were the winners.
John Roe of Glencullen won the Vintage Tractor, while Eddie Farrell of Walkinstown took the prize for Best Vintage car. John Berry of Bray retained his title for arm wrestling.
So with food stalls, children’s sports, games galore to keep them busy, the sunshine added another lovely aspect, being able to sit around eating and listening to the great music provided by fantastic volunteers. Many thanks to them. The arts and crafts, the vintage cars, the people who joined in the Victorian costume competition all added to a wonderful day. All this and the two charities, Purple House and Open Door, will benefit from it.
Congratulations to Kilmacanogue Senior Team as they sailed into the Wicklow Intermediate Football Championship semi-finals with a comprehensive 3-14 to 1-11 victory over Ballymanus. Kilmac set a blistering pace from the throw in and lead 3-08 to 0-03 points at halftime following goals by Arran Creavin, Sam O’Callaghan and Stephen Morgan. Ballymanus staged a fightback in the second half but it wasn’t enough and now it is on to a semi-final v Tinahely on the weekend of September 29 and 30. Well done Mark and the lads.
CLAN NA GAEL UNDER-12S
Our under-12 Clan Na Gael Champions had a great day out in Croke Park on Sunday at the ladies all-Ireland Football Finals to mark the end of their very successful season. A massive thanks must go to Mentors Ryan Lavery and Mick Blackbyrne, who looked after the team so well throughout the year and thanks also to Eamon and Jackie for organising the logistics and the post-match McDonalds Meal on Sunday and the squad are pictured having a great time.
SOCCER ACTION
The Soccer Academy training started back last Thursday at 6 p.m. under the guidance of Jason Minto. If you know of any children between the ages of 3 and seven that may be interested in talking part and looking for fun please let them know. All are welcome and it’s free to attend in Ryders Field.
The under-12s played Greystones and lost out 3-1 when a draw would have been a fairer result but that is football. This was however a great performance and a great game to watch between two evenly matched teams but the ball didn’t bounce our Glens way. Michael Prendergast got the goal and man of the match was Reuben Smith with a solid left back performance. The team missed their battler Cian Redden, who is now out injured till 2019 and all wish him a speedy recovery after a bad fall during the week.
Glencormac United under-14s beat Carnew at home 1-0. This was a very tough game for the Glens, who did controll the game from start to finish but just couldn’t create any clear-cut scoring chances and it remained 0-0 at halftime. The second half was much of the same as the first period but with about five minutes to go, Super sub John Fox ran onto a through ball and slotted the ball coolly past the keeper to give the lads all three points. Carnew were reduced to 10 men in the last minute for an outrageous off the ball kick at the Glens rightfull which has no place in football and well done to the team for not getting involved with all the silly nonsense that happened in the last few minutes of the game.
The senior team are back in the Wicklow Premier Division and kicked off their campaign on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at home to Arklow United. The Glens trailed to an early goal for most of the game but never gave up on battling back and were rewarded when Josh O’Callaghan smashed the ball into the net and despite all their efforts, could not find a winner. Luke Reynolds had a superb game on his debut along with Craig Williams and Simon Doyle.
This week the Glens are at home to Mill Celtic FC from Kildare in the Leinster Senior Cup with a 2 p.m. or 2.30 p.m. kick off, support would be welcome.
