GREAT SUPPORT FOR PROJECT FROM WICKLOW TO GREYSTONES

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

A PETITION in support of an East Coast Greenway from Wicklow town to Greystones has received over 12,000 signatures.

The East Coast Greenway Group also met recently with Labour Party Chairperson Jack O’Connor and the Wicklow candidate in the next General Election pledged his support for the project.

The Greenway Group feel funding is urgently required for coastal erosion protection, with a cycle and walking Greenway built at the same time between the towns of Wicklow, Kilcoole, Newcastle and Greystones.

East Coast Greenway Group leader Ciarán Lally is pleaded with the progress taking place and the amount of support the plans have locally.

‘Our petition on change.org has now surpassed 12,000 signatures and continues to rise. This is a hugely significant milestone and further proves the level of support we have from the people of Wicklow to see a Greenway developed quickly.

‘With the additional €10 million committed by the government in the 2019 budget, to a total national Greenway fund of €63 million, we continue to be optimistic that we can turn our Greenway dream into a reality’.

The Greenway Group also held a recent meeting with Jack O’Connor and his Labour colleagues as the details of the proposal were explained to them.

Commenting on the meeting Mr O Connor offered the Labour party’s ongoing support.

‘We in the Wicklow Labour Party are very impressed by the approach which the team promoting the East Coast Greenway project have adopted.

‘It is very deep, thorough and systematic, resulting in a well thought out, robust proposal. We have decided to engage fully with them to develop a full and complete understanding of all aspects of it, so that we can usefully help in the promotion of it both locally and nationally.’
