Katie documentary to be screened at two local theatres

- By MARY FOGARTY

THE film ‘Katie’ will be screened at theatres in Greystones and Bray in the coming weeks.

The documentary will be shown at Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on Monday and Tuesday, November 12 and 13, at 8 p.m.

Then Greystones Film Club will screen the piece on Wednesday, November 14, at 8 p.m. at Whale Theatre.

Katie Taylor is universally acknowledged as the game-changer who put women’s amateur boxing on the map.

She won six amateur European championships, five world amateur championships and an Olympic Gold Medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games. But a devastating year – both personally and professionally – culminated when she failed to defend her Olympic crown with a surprising defeat at Rio 2016.

Katie, is an intimate take on the boxer’s efforts to rebuild her career and her life following that disappointment. Director Ross Whitaker (Saviours, Unbreakable: The Mark Pollock Story, Between Land and Sea) gains unprecedented access to the ultra-private Taylor as she turns professional.

Whitaker shadowed Taylor for a year and this film is the product of that.

Taylor’s shining career had just suffered a major blow at the Rio Olympics in 2016, Whitaker remarking, ‘I thought it was immensely brave of Katie to allow my camera to start following her at this low point - it’s a credit to her that she didn’t flinch in the face of telling her own complex story.’

And it’s clearly paid off. Not only did Taylor enjoy a spectacular comeback during her time with Whitaker - winning the WBA title in 2017 and the IBF title in 2018 - but the resulting documentary, Katie, picked up the Best Irish Feature Documentary at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh.
