Richard was a man of great integrity and compassion

Richard W Armstrong died peacefully on August 30, 2018 after a short illness. He was 86.

Richard was born to Irish immigrants Elvina (née Burns) and Richard Armstrong in Chestnut Hill, PA.

His parents came from both Wicklow and Leitrim. He was a grandson of Elizabeth (née Prestage) and William Burns, of Knockenree, Avoca.

He attended Germantown Friends School where he was president of his class.

He matriculat­ed from Harvard College, graduating Summa Cum Laude. After serving as a Lieutenant in the Navy, Richard obtained an A.M. degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Internatio­nal Studies.

He then entered government service at the Atomic Energy Commission and NASA, before becoming the Deputy Project Manager of the Head Start Programme. Richard went on to a successful 23-year career at Chase Manhattan Bank, where he became CFO of the Commercial Sector.

Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara Armstrong, their sons Richard and James, and their extended families.

He is remembered as a man of great character, integrity and compassion, who cared deeply for his family.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 20 at the Cedar Crest Village Chapel, 1 Cedar Crest Drive, Pompton Plains. Cremation was private.
