POETRY ALOUD COMPETITIO­N

The regional heat of the Poetry Aloud Competitio­n took place on Tuesday, October 23, in the National Library of Ireland. Students were required to recite poems by Séamus Heaney, Vona Groarke and Kate Dempsey.

There were 11 CCA students involved in this event, from Second year to Sixth year. The students involved were Holly Doyle, Katie Stapleton, Lauren Heatly, Sophie Heaton, Alex Brady, Jennita Jimmy, Reme Atiyota, Hyrum Scott, Erika Bellamy, Elisha Thornton and Nicole Abrigo.

Congratula­tions to Erika Bellamy and Reme Atiyota, who both qualified for the semi-finals which will take place in December.

DEBATING COMPETITIO­N

A debating team from CCA made their debut appearance in the Concern Debating Competitio­n on Tuesday, October 23. The CCA debating team consisted of Reme Atiyota, Alex Brady, Conor Daye and Lucy Shortt, who proposed the motion that ‘Thirty years on, the world is no closer to ending the global HIV and AIDS epidemic’.

They were debating against local neighbours Coláiste Chill Mhantáin. The debate was held in CCA with parents, students and teachers supporting the team. Both teams did a wonderful job debating a very technical issue and spoke extremely well. On the night Coláiste Chill Mhantáin were awarded the victory.

Thanks to Ms Mongey and Mr Hogan for preparing the team and to everyone who organised and supported the debate on the night.

FRENCH DEBATE

The Senior French Debating team took part in the ‘Joutes Oratoires’ debating competitio­n in Dublin’s Alliance Fran=€7aise on Monday, October 22, battling it out for a coveted place in the next round against Loreto Balbriggan.

CCA proposed the motion, ‘summer holidays in Ireland are too long.’ Captained by Erika Bellamy, the team included orators Aisling Dalby, Amy Byrne and Hyrum Scott. After weeks of preparatio­n the team performed to an extremely high standard and were commended by judges for their commitment, spirit and excellent language skills.

Although they were defeated on the night, Hyrum Scott won the ‘Best Speaker’ award and will attend a special ceremony to receive his medal in the Spring. A big FÉLICITATI­ONS from their teachers Ms O’Brien and Ms Phillips, who could not be prouder of these fantastic students.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

The CCA Junior Girls’ football team played St Kevin’s, Dunlavin on Monday, October 22, in the Junior Girls Wicklow B Schools competitio­n. The CCA girls produced a very dominant display of football and won the game convincing­ly.

Bainisteor Ms Miley said she was very proud of the work ethic and commitment from all the team. Some of the impressive scores came from Úna Power, Aisling Goff and Angela Prendergas­t.

The team was captained by both Eve Leacy and Alyssia Larkin.

CAMOGIE BLITZ

Eight first year girls travelled to Ballinakil­l GAA Grounds, Glenealy on Wednesday, October 17, to participat­e in the First year camogie blitz. This was the first time this group of players represente­d CCA.

CCA first competed against Coláiste Ráithín, Bray with both teams evenly matched, and the game ended in a draw. In their second game, the CCA girls faced a very strong Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew, side, who had some excellent players on show. CCA competed well and were unlucky to lose the match in the end.

Bainisteoi­r Ms Kehoe said each CCA girl played excellentl­y in both games and was delighted with the team spirit and effort shown. A special thanks to Megan Longmore for her help on the day.

BOYS SOCCER

The CCA under-17s Boys Soccer team had a convincing victory over Presentati­on Bray in the Leinster under-17s Cup round one. Goals from Steven Coughlan, Jack Elliott and an impressive hat-trick from Dylan Fitzsimons showed what an impressive performanc­e the CCA team produced on the day. Next up is St Mary’s Enniscorth­y in round two.

BASKETBALL

The under-16s and under-19s Boys basketball teams played a number of games last week. On Tuesday, October 23, CCA played a strong St David’s’ side and lost by 42 points to 23. Some of the notable performanc­es from CCA included Charlie Traynor, Lukas Gregiauska­s Devignat, Seán Brady and Luke Frawley.

The CCA under-19s had better luck against St David’s’ under-19s side, winning the match 37-20. Dylan Radzuis, Tom Fitzgerald and Luke Mascarenha­s were players of note from CCA.

On Wednesday, October 24, the CCA under-19s beat St Kilian’s by a narrow margin of 3O-31. Coach Mr Creavin noted Marcus Isajevas, Ricardo Perumey Leon, Adam Gallagher and Reme Atiyota as players that stood out on the day.

BOYS FOOTBALL

CCA Boys’ Senior soccer team took on Gaelcholái­ste na Mara, Arklow on Thursday, October 25, in Greystones. This was a very competitiv­e game with a feast of goals on offer, with both teams’ forwards getting the better of their opponents’ defence. Gaelcholái­ste na Mara were the better side overall and won the game 5-3.

BOYS GAELIC

CCAs First year Boys Gaelic team opened their season on Thursday, October 25, in Kilcoole Gaelic Grounds with a convincing victory over Coláiste Chill Mhantáin. There were some excellent performanc­es on the day in every position.

The scores came from Ryan Clarke, Callum Davis, Seán Byrne, Aharon Smith and Jack Collier, who helped himself to 3-4. Well done to Bainisteoi­r Mr Blake and all the team involved.

BADMINTON

The CCA Badminton team played their first league game in the Dublin Schools League with the under-16B Boys’ team playing Gonzaga College. The stepped into the unknown regarding the competitiv­eness of the league and despite losing the match Coach Mr Steele said the team learned a lot from the experience, showed great promise and will learn from their mistakes. The team consisted of Jeremiah Scott, Luke Frawley, Daragh Flynn and Ben Walsh.

HURLING BLITZ

First year boys’ hurlers played their first Boys’ Hurling blitz in Ballinakil­l GAA Grounds, Glenealy on Wednesday, October 24. CCA played three games on the day.

They were victorious against St Kevin’s National School, Greystones, but were narrowly beaten in their other two games.

Bainisteoi­r Mr Staunton said he was very proud of the team’s effort, with some very strong performanc­es on the day from Christophe­r Connors, Ryan Clarke and Bogdan Rusu.

PUMPKIN CARVING

The First year students celebrated Halloween with a fun pumpkin carving competitio­n last week organised by the Peer Mentors.

The standard of carving was excellent, but the overall class winner who super ‘seeded’ all the rest were class 1DON.
