Kilmacanogue MICHAEL GILES RIP

The death took place recently of Michael (Mick) Giles, Gorey and late of Kilmacanogue. Mick passed away peacefully in the care of the staff of Gorey District Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Marian and will be sadly missed by his family Russell, Allen, Mark, David and Jenny, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law and grandchildren, his loving sister Mary, brother Johnny and his wife Francis, extended family and friends.

Michael’s Funeral Service was held on Thursday afternoon with removal to the Victorian Chapel at Mount Jerome Crematorium for a committal service later that day. Deepest sympathy is extended to the Giles family on their sad loss from the community of Kilmacanogue. Rest in Peace Mick.

CHOIR CONCERT

You know that Christmas is not far away when a great friend of the ‘Kilmacanogue Diary’ gets in touch with us. The St Fergal’s Men’s Choir will hold their annual concert on Sunday the 25th Novemeber at 7.30 p.m. which is a fundraising event for their parish, St Fergal’s in Ballywaltrim. The choir are great supporters of Kilmacanogue and we all can re call the wonderful concert they put on for us in our village for the Shane Vickers Trust.

This year the concert is a country themed singalong and they will have a selection of great country classics as well as some old favourites. If you like the music of Glen Campbell, Don Williams, Willie Nelson, The Carpenters, The Eagles and a whole host of other favourites, well then this is the place to be.

The concert will take place in St Anthony’s Room, adjoining St Fergal’s Church in Ballywaltrim and because this is a limited seating event, admission is by ticket only. Tickets are free and available from the St Fergal’s parish office or any member of St Fergal’s Men’s Choir or indeed people can contact Michael directly at 086 3647315. As this is a fundraising event, all attendees are invited to make a donation if they so wish to St Fergal’s Parish on the night of the concert. Best of luck to Michael and his wonderful choir for yet another successful and entertaining night.

Well done to the two lads who were the stand out golfers in the 2018 season and what a great way to end the golf season for Tom Byrne.

Wicklow’, it will be presented by Seán J Murphy MA Historian and Genealogist, retired UCD Lecturer and presently attached to the National Library of Ireland, lecturing in Genealogy. This will be a very interesting talk about the closely intertwined Wicklow families of Barton and Childers. In particular, the talk will deal with the careers of Robert Barton (1881-1975) and Erskine Childers (1870-1922), their contribution to the national cause and their spouses Molly Osgood and Rachel Warren of Boston.

SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY

Our senior citizens are reminded to save a date in their diary. The annual senior citizens Christmas party is a little earlier this year and will once again take place in the Summerhill House Hotel on Sunday, December 9.

SOCCER ACTION

It was a good bank weekend for the footballers of Glencormac United. The under-14s were at home to Ashford Rovers and won 3-1 in another great team performance to keep the Glens top if the table with two games left to play. The Glens started the game at a blistering pace and created a lot of chances and after 20 minutes they were rewarded when Oisin Kelly opened the scoring but then sat back a little near the end of the first half and let Ashford get into the game and they created a few half chances but it remained 1-0 at the break. At the start of the second half, the Glens were still off the pace but gradually got on top but with 15 minutes to go, Ashford hit them on the break and it was 1-1. However, this spurned the lads and a long goal kick went over everybody for Oisin to run onto and score his second then two minutes later Oisin popped up again to complete his hatrick and his eighth goal in three games and seal the three points. Two tough games now to come against the league runner’s up Wicklow Rovers and then the league champions Rathnew to try finish in the top two and get a place in the shield final.

The under-12s also faced Ashford and were equally impressive in a 2-0 victory. Finn Kelly and Alex Condon sealed a great win and with lads away, a massive thank you to Alex and Seán Mooney, who came up from the under-11s to help out and both had great games. While the whole team played very well, the man of the match has to go to goalkeeper Harry Jones, who made three fantastic saves when the score was 1-0 and was vital to this victory against a very good Ashford team.

Also well done Cian on achieving under-17 player of the year with Bray Wanderers yet another great achievement for this young man congratulations.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Plenty of top action for our teams last weekend. Only our under-11s saw no action. Our Academy team hosted Roundwood and they played out a series of very close games. On the day among the players who starred were Tommie Ryan, Ruby Odlum, Hubert Wyborski, Adon Thampi and Kaitlyn Mullen.

Our 8’s hosted a very gallant Carnew team. On the day some excellent football was played and among the players who starred were Rory O’Gorman, Theo Messitt and Nathan Donohoe.

Our 9’s travelled to Avoca to take on St Patrick’s and after an exciting series of games among the players to stand out for Newtown were Jack Barlow and Leon O’Connor.

Our under-10s (kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) played host to Greystones Yellow. Newtown’s goals came from Ryan Collins (2), William Valentine and Aidan Heffernan. On the day among the players who played well were Luke Turley, Sebastian Anton and Pat Carey.

Our 12’s got back into the winners enclosure with an impressive 7-1 win at home to Sporting Greystones. Iggy Szpilka (2), Paudie Gammell, Jamie Fitzgerald, Jack Coughlan, Max Synnott and Patrick Martin accounted for the home team’s goals. On the day Jack, Hannah Martin and Kiera Farrelly starred for the team.

Unfortunately for the 14’s their opening victory in the shield was undone with a 7-3 home loss to Avonmore FC They had raced into a two-goal lead but the away side got their noses in front with three quickfire goals. Ill discipline cost us dear halfway through the first half when we had a player sent off and it was an uphill battle from there on. Newtown’s goals came from Ryan Clarke, Charlie Sullivan and Bobby Dowling scored the Newtown goals while Clarke, Michael Byrne, Laragh Davis and Martin Kelly were the pick of the Newtown players.

The following are the fixtures for the week ending Saturday/ Sunday, October 27/28: Development Squad Practise every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Academy Team – Fixture tbc; under-eights – Fixture tbc; under-nines – Fixture tbc; under-10s – Fixture tbc; under-11s at home to Avonmore FC ko Saturday at 11.15 a.m.; under-12s – Fixture tbc; under-14s away to Coolboy Rangers ko to be confirmed (fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

All fixtures, competitive and non-trophy, will finish weekend of November 17/18, followed by the WDSL Awards, Presentation Day in the Parkview Hotel on Sunday, November 25 (details times etc to follow).
