Tyrrell dominates

Mark leads Dwyers to Ray Daniels Cup joy over Tinahely

- MARTIN O’BRIEN at Annacurra

IT was Wednesday Night Lights for the Under 11’s of Michael Dwyers and Tinahely. They met in the Ray Daniels Perpetual Memorial Cup in Annacurra, and they served up a humdinger.

This game was an advertisement for the coaching of football in Wicklow, as both teams displayed the skills and footballing intelligence that was beyond their years. Versed in all the fundamental skills, these young boys and girls served up a great contest.

The first half was the Michael Dwyers show, as they dominated and got some fine scores. The main man was Mark Tyrell, with his lethal left foot. He took some fine scores and displayed his silky-smooth skills throughout the first half. He was ably assisted by Conall Harmon, Mark Kinsella and Jack McRae.

Tinahely, to their credit, kept playing their game and had some stand out performers in Callum Keenaghan, Aine Darcy and Tiernan O’Byrne. The score just harder to come by.

Half-time and the score read Michael Dwyers 2-5 Tinahely 1-0.

The second half was a more even game. It ebbed and flowed, up and down the field, end to end stuff. Again, the skill level was impressive to say the least.

Tinahely plugged away and got some great scores from Tiernan O’Byrne, Cian Walker and Odhran Mahoney.

They had some great passing moves which were a joy to behold; both teams showing off their skills on the defensive side of the game in this half also. Cian Breslin for Tinahely and Chloe Kinsella for Michael Dwyers, in particular, gave some outstanding displays of tackling and bravery.

Dwyers were able to stay ahead though, with delightful play from Liam McRae hammering home a volley that wouldn’t be out of place in the Premier League. The final score of the game by Aoife Cann wrapped up the victory for Dwyers.

Overall, a very enjoyable played in fantastic spirits by both teams who have great potential for future ventures. Ben Daniels, Rays son, presented the cup to the joint Michael Dwyers captains. Mark Tyrell was awarded the Man of the Match award.
