ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS

BCC are delighted to pilot a new scheme to try to reduce the use of plastic water bottles in the school. With some fundraising and a little contribution from the recipients, first and second years have been given aluminium water bottles that can be re-filled from our water fountain that the Student Council fundraised for last year.

The bottles come in four colours; blue, green, red and pink. We ran a competition for a slogan that first year Harriet Laurenns won. The slogan is ‘Be Carbon Cautious.’

We hope this will greatly reduce the amount of plastic we are using in the school and if it does we will look to get the bottles for further year groups.

Also in keeping with the recycling theme we will be having a ‘Leave no Trace’ recycling workshop for our first and second years this week.

BOYS GAELIC FOOTBALL

SENIOR WICKLOW SHIELD – On Monday, November 19, the Blessington Community College Senior Boys Gaelic Football team, under the guidance of their coaches Mr Kirby and Sorcha Nolan, beat Temple Carrig in the quarter final of the Senior Wicklow Shield Championship.

BCC dominated the opening few minutes creating a few goal opportunities which were denied by the Temple Carrig goalkeeper and the crossbar. However, despite the opportunities created, Temple Carrig took their own chances and dominated the next 20 minutes or so scoring two goals in that time to no reply. The final five minutes before half-time proved to be the catalyst to BCCs comeback.

BCC played scintillating football for the next 20 minutes where every player contributed to an amazing comeback. BCC overturned their 10 point deficit in the 31st minute to an eight point lead in the 55th minute. Temple Carrig scored two goals and a point in the remaining minutes, but it was just not enough on a day of comebacks which saw BCC coming out victorious.

LEINSTER CHAMPIONSHIP – On Wednesday, November 21, the Blessington Community College Senior Boys Gaelic Football team were out again but this time they were knocked out of the Leinster Championship by Coláiste Eoin, Hacketstown.

BCC began very brightly, scoring a goal through Jake O’Kelly early on. Coláiste Eoin however responded with three points. BCC found it difficult to break down Colaiste Eoin, however they did add two more points. Colaiste Eoin finished the half strongly.

BCC returned to the pitch with renewed vigour, narrowing the deficit to two points thanks to a goal by Claude Tounou. However, Coláiste Eoin took complete control and showed why they have been Leinster Champions.

We would like to wish Coláiste Eoin the best in the remainder of the Leinster Championship.

The focus for the BCC team now turns to the Wicklow championship where they have a semi-final to play in a few weeks and we wish the team and their coaches the best of luck.

CAREER FOCUS

After several trips to college open days recently, we have had a speaker from Inchicore PLC visit to give an excellent talk to fifth and sixth years about the Further Education sector and alternative entry to third level education. On Wednesday, December 5, a speaker from DCU came to address our fifth and sixth year students about their options in DCU for their bright futures.
