CLUB CALL

-

seriously needs fresh blood in order to help the club progress and prosper.

The way it is at present the five people on the committee are snowed under with work and could do with a helping hand with the workload. Any little bit of assistance would be a big help. With 26 teams in the club if we got one representative from each team to help out for one year we would then have a very healthy committee to help the club prosper.

If each team in the club had one representative on the committee every year we would definitely get a lot more done in order for the club to prosper. The club promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and senior men and ladies in the community, our club is growing all the time and the committee is getting smaller, any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated.

The new junior season is just around the corner, the WDSL season is due to start on the weekend of the February 16 with the community shields at the under-13s, 14s and 15s and then the league action kicks off the following weekend of February 23 and 24.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning (weather permitting) under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne.

The academy takes places on the all-weather pitch on the club grounds at Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of three years to eight years.

The academy starts at 11am and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Ann Byrne [nee Kinsella] who sadly passed away recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband Sean, children Emma, Jenifer, Ruth, Ian and Colm, her grandchildren James, Evan, Caia, Millie, Bella, Feidhlim, Phoebe and Finn, her extended family and friends at this sad time, may she rest in peace. executive of the WDSL that they will be playing every weekend soon after the start of the season.

Our Under-8s, Under-10 Red and Academy teams were in Futsal action last weekend and all three teams were in superb form. The Academy team travelled to Allen Park in Aughrim where they played against their counterparts from Arklow Town, Aughrim Rangers, Coolboy Rangers and St. Patricks.

Plenty of good football was played and all players receive a medal for their participation on the day.

Our Under-8s were in Newtown and they came out on top of their three games against Enniskerry Red and White and St. Patricks. The 8s squad included Bobby Spillane, Tyler Doyle, Nathan Donohoe, Aaron Nolan, Gerry Hoban and David McCormack.

Likewise, the Under-10 Red team came out on top in their three games against WDSL Girls, Enniskerry and Arklow United. The 10s squad included Nikita Neaga, Dylan Dunleavy, David Mackey, Aidan Heffernan, William Valentine, Pat Carey, Sebastian Anton & Ryan Collins.

We will be fielding teams from under-8s up to under-13s and although it looks more than likely that we won’t have any older teams at the moment, as usual if the demand is there and players are prepared to commit to training and matches then nothing is impossible.

Last season’s academy team will now become this season’s under-8s team, though some of these players will be playing at the under-8s age group for two more years.

Our Development Squad practise every Saturday morning in the Community Centre Sports Hall from 10am until 11am. All of our teams are now back in pre-season training.
