WICKLOW ROVERS

-

The senior first team travelled to take on Glasnevin FC in an early kick off on Saturday with the intention of going clear at the top of the table.

The lads took nothing for granted against a struggling Glasnevin side and produced a seven-star performance winning 7-0.

This result sees them extend their lead to three points at the head of the pack and they also have the luxury of a game in hand on their nearest challenger Ballymun United. Adam Cox fired home an excellent hat-trick, Ciaran McGettigan weighed in with a brace with both Tom Smullen and Gareth Murphy hitting singles.

Definitely the lads have run into form at just the right time and have now put themselves in the driving seat with the destiny of the title very much in their own hands.

Wicklow Rovers second team hosted Arklow Celtic under lights at Whitegates on Friday night in a Division 1 clash. Rovers started well and pushed forward early with intent.

They continued to push Arklow’s defence and were rewarded with a cracking goal from Patrick O’Keane that put Rovers ahead. Arklow gave the perfect response with some neat football that led to a goal from a tight angle to level the game.

Rovers continued to hold possession in the second half and penetrated the Arklow backline on several occasions but failed to capitalise. Arklow had some good spells but couldn’t break Rovers down. Just when a draw was looking likely Rovers pushed forward once more and when Stuart Cox needed to step up, he didn’t disappoint placing the ball neatly into the bottom corner to give Wicklow Rovers their first league win of the season.
