PERMISSION GIVEN FOR 25-BEDROOM HOTEL MADE OUT OF SHIPPING CONTAINERS ON WICKLOW’S SOUTH QUAY
PLANNING permission has been granted for a 25-bedroom hotel at South Quay in Wicklow town made out of shipping containers.
Waterbrand Holdings Ltd applied to Wicklow County Council for planning in July of last year and received the green light for the development this week
Two existing warehouses will be demolished at the South Quay to allow for the construction of the hotel with 25 bedrooms comprised by shipping containers. There are also plans for a café/restaurant, wine bar and roof terrace and 14 car parking spaces. The stone wall at Quarantine Hill will be retained and the overall development will be 15.5 metres in height.
Cllr Shay Cullen has welcomed Wicklow County Council’s decision.
‘It’s fantastic news as accommodation is the key to developing Wicklow town into a prominent destination. Hopefully this will be the start of the development of the quays. Losing the Grand Hotel was a big blow so hopefully this new hotel will benefit the whole town and start developing that whole area. With plans for a greenway from Wicklow town to Greystones, there is huge potential to transform Wicklow town into a major tourism location,’ said Cllr Cullen.
15 submissions were lodged with Wicklow County Council, mostly in opposition to the development. The permission granted came with a number of conditions, including that the roof terrace and wine bar shall be closed between the hours of 12 midnight and 8 a.m..
