Avonmore show goes on as committee is elected

- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

‘THE show will go on!’ for Avonmore Musical Society after a successful Extraordinary General Meeting has saved the group from folding.

The society issued an urgent appeal last week for new committee members, warning that the 40th anniversary show could be in jeopardy if volunteers didn’t come forward.

Luckily, the community of Arklow responded well and a new committee was elected on Thursday, February 7. Tomás Byrne will now steer the society into the future as chairman, ably assisted by Fiona Walker (secretary), Colin Moore (treasurer), Els Penston (PRO) and committee members Colm Moules, Joanne Logue, Dearbhla O’Connor, Patrick Bracken, John Hughes and Lucy Hayes.

A large number of past and present members were in attendance at the EGM which showed testament to the strong interest in keeping the society going. The society, which has been entertaining Arklow since 1979, would like to extend its thanks to the many people who sent good wishes and words of support in the run up to the meeting.

Newly-elected chairman Tomás Byrne extended his thanks to the outgoing committee for their hard work and dedication.

‘A special mention to Rob Donnelly who has been a committee member for the last 22 years – 13 of those as chairman,’ said Mr Byrne.

‘I’ve some big shoes to fill but I’m confident that I, and the newly elected committee, will do our very best for Avonmore and its members going forward. Onwards and upwards and we’ ll put on a great show for Arklow at Easter.’

Avonmore Musical Society’s 40th production, ‘9-5’, will be staged in St Mary’s College from Tuesday, April 23, to Saturday, April 27.

Rehearsals will resume this week and the newly elected committee, cast and production team of Stephen Acton, Naoimh Penston, Martina Lynch and Amy Penston, are looking forward to another great show.
