PURE GENTLEMAN

‘Michael’s passing is a major loss to Wicklow’

-

WICKLOW GAA Chairman Martin Fitzgerald says that Michael Murphy’s passing is a truly sad occasion for the entire county over which the Cork native served as full-time secretary for 11 years.

‘It’s a major, major loss for Wicklow, in every sense,’ said Martin Fitzgerald. ‘Obviously, it’s a much deeper and more profound loss for his family and I wish to extend our heartfelt sympathies to both the Murphy and Finnegan families, but in terms of his experience, the huge respect in which Michael was held, his kindness and his genuine warmth, his passing is a major loss for this county,’ he added.

Martin Fitzgerald said that it was a fact that Michael Murphy had never fallen out with anyone in his dealings with club and county over the years and that it was his demeanor and personality that was the cause of his popularity.

‘First of all, he was a gentleman,’ said Martin. ‘I never encountered him in a bad mood, no matter what he was asked to do. He served as county secretary from 2004 to 2015 and Michael was a man who did everything. No job was too big or small. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about the man,’ he added.

‘Michael was held in such high regard at county, Leinster and Croke Park level. His knowledge and his way or working with people was really appreciated by all who were fortunate enough to work with him and he is just a major, major loss to Wicklow GAA.’

Michael will repose at Flannery’s Funeral Home, Bachelors Walk in Wicklow Town from 3pm until 8pm today (Wednesday).

Walking from Wicklow Tennis Club to arrive at St Patrick’s Church on Thursday morning for Funeral Mass at noon followed by interment in Rathnew Cemetery.
