SUPER ABBIE STRIKES GOLD
Joy for Crookstown Millview
at Athlone IT
A group of boys and girls from Baltinglass and Dunlavin representing one of the smallest athletic clubs in Leinster, Crookstown Millview, took part in the Leinster Indoor Athletics finals in Athlone IT last weekend. The club is just over the Wicklow/Kildare border between Kilcullen and Ballitore.
The highlight of the weekend for the club was the gold medal won by Abbie Doherty in the girls under-13 600m. Abbie ran a fantastic race sitting in behind the front runner for 500m, then kicked for home and blew the field away, her time was 1.45, winning her race by three seconds.
Abbie also won silver (8.58) in the girls under-13 60m, pipping her friends and training partners Valerie Doogue by 0.02 seconds and Anna Taylor by 0.05 seconds. Abbie, Valerie and Anna won gold in the girls under-12 All-Ireland relays last year.
Valerie Doogue brought home a second bronze when she jumped a personal best 4.22m in the girl’s under-13 long jump.
Damien Cielec Corrigan ran a PB of 8.20 to win silver in the boys under-14 60m. Adam Harte from Grangecon was pipped into silver by 0.01 in the boys under-18 60m running a season’s best 7.40.
Holly Wright from Dunlavin won silver in the under-15 girls shot putt, throwing 10.74. Indeed, Holly hadn’t much time to celebrate as she had to rush off to play with the under-16 girl’s county football team. Holly’s younger sister Cara finished seventh in the girls shot putt.
In summary, it was an incredible effort from all the athletes representing the club over the weekend. They showed great commitment Bronze medalist in the under-13 girls long jump, Valerie Doogue (left), at the Leinster Indoor Athletics at Athlone IT.
determination and enthusiasm and as always brought great pride to all associated with the club.
Wicklow Minor footballer Alan
Miley, running for St Laurence O’Toole’s club in Carlow, won gold in the boys under-18 200m and 400m. THE Woodpecker pub in Ashford hosted its annual Woodpecker Open last Sunday with a total of 40 players entering in pursuit of the trophy.
With Wicklow darts on a high after the recent success in the Leinster championships and with the All-Irelands only two weeks away this was a great chance to judge where they stood individually.
James O’Toole was particularly impressive, marching through his group without dropping a leg, however, in the last 16 he lost a gripping encounter with former Irish number one Mick
