GREAT SUPPORT FOR ‘TEN FOR KEN’ WALK
A LITTLE rain did nothing to dampen spirits during the ‘Ten for Ken’ 5k charity walk on Saturday last.
Around 200 people joined long-time Arklow resident Ken Moroney for the event, which was a fundraiser for the Parkinsons Association of Ireland.
Mr Moroney, who was diagnosed with the illness ten years ago, set the pace along a route from the Vale Road to the Duck Pond. He was supported during the walk by his wife Maisie, his son Conor and his daughter Claire.
Mr Moroney’s youngest son, Cathal, also completed his own Ten for Ken walk in Chicago on Sunday, October 6 where he raised just over $2000 for Parkinson’s research.
Saturday’s walkers included friends, families, former colleagues from Arklow and New Ross, past pupils of St Mary’s College and members of local drama groups. Many of the walkers dressed in green, the colour associated with the Parkinsons Association of Ireland.
Over €11,200 has been raised so far from the event, however, the final amount is expected to be higher.
‘Ken did the walk using his walker and completed it at the front. He was so proud and overwhelmed Ken and Maisie Moroney in their home on the Vale Road, from where they set off on their ‘Ten for Ken’ 5k fundraising walk.
by the support,’ said Ciara McGrath, one of walk’s organisers.
The skies had cleared by the time the group reached the Duck Pond. Participants enjoyed light refreshments in the cafe at the Coral Leisure Centre.
Organisers thanked everyone who took part in raising funds and awareness about Parkinsons.
‘It was such a positive event and a great show of support for Ken,’ Ms McGrath added.
