Eventful few months planned for Wicklow Active Retirement

-

WICKLOW Active Retirement Association (WARA) started their Autumn season with the weekly meeting held in early September where a large attendance of members heard of plans to hold a coffee morning in aid of Wicklow Hospice.

Over 90 people attended the event and enjoyed a morning of lively chat and a lovely spread of homemade cakes and biscuits provided by members. €780.00 was raised which was a great achievement.

In typical Active Retirement fashion, there was no time to rest as the next day a large group of members took a coach from Wicklow to visit Glasnevin Cemetery and the National Botanic Gardens. They received an excellent guided tour of the cemetery followed by lunch and a stroll around the gardens on a beautiful autumn day.

On Tuesday, September 24, WARA hosted a visit by a group representing assistance dogs. Members were introduced to four beautiful and well behaved dogs, including a lovely puppy.

On Wednesday, September 25, the group were off in the coach again, this time to visit the wonderful Dublin Zoo. They were also beneficiaries of special reduced rates for Positive Ageing Week. They met with the keepers, saw many of the animals being fed and witnessed the first outing of the newly-born baby giraffe.

On Tuesday, October 1, over 50 members enjoyed a happy morning of community singing, led by Choir Director, Ann Lavin. Ann reminded everyone that the choir meet at 3 p.m. on Fridays in the Pastoral Centre where they rehearse all the old favourites in preparation for concerts in the various nursing homes around Wicklow. New members are always welcome.

Later in October, over 30 members set off for the annual Autumn holiday, this time to Oughterard, County Galway.

In November, WARA have booked tickets for Oklahoma in the National Concert Hall with the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society.

New Members are always welcome to join activities in the Pastoral Centre at St. Patrick’s Church at 10.45 a.m. every Tuesday.
