ARKLOW STRIKES GOLD

-

THIS year, Arklow has won its first ever gold medal at the TidyTowns competition and received the national prize for water waste prevention for the unique Xeriscape garden.

The Arklow TidyTowns team want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped in any way this year. These include the people who quietly look after their patch to litter pickers, residents, housing estates, schools, community groups, Coast Care, Men’s Shed, Saturday Club, Sea Scouts, Girl Guides, sports clubs, probation services, Pure Mile groups and local businesses.

A word of thanks must also go to the CE Scheme participants, Wicklow County Council, Arklow Town Team, Arklow Municipal District councillors and staff for their support of Arklow Tidy Towns. One final note to congratulate the trojan work of Teresa Earls, who won our Volunteer of the Year.

Arklow Tidy Towns also thanks their many sponsors, big and small, including anyone who donated materials, plants or their time.

This gold medal has taken years of consistent work to attain. This year’s projects have included the Riverwalk regeneration, Xeriscape garden, repaint our town, while supporting the council/Town Team’s great initiatives on Moments in Time: Dementia Friendly Garden and Alf Skua Lightship roundabout.

The team is delighted with what Arklow has achieved and intend to continue to improve our lovely town with a focus on biodiversity and sustainability. Arklow also won the Best Kept Large Town 2019 in July.

For anyone interested in volunteering, TidyTowns meets every Tuesday and Saturday. Gloves, materials and a warm cuppa are provided. All help, even if you only have an hour or two to spare, is appreciated. Alternatively, consider joining your local residents’ association who do tremendous work in your neighbourhood.
