1 ’PHOTOGRAPH’ SCREENING: The film ‘Photograph’ will screen at Mermaid Arts Centre on Monday, October 14, at 8 p.m. Admission is €8 or €6.50 concession and available at mermaidartscentre.ie. ‘Photograph’ is a 2019 Indian coming-of-age romantic drama film written, co-produced and directed by Ritesh Batra. Rafi is a struggling street photographer in Mumbai. While dreaming of a better life, he sends most of the money he earns back to his village to pay off the debts of his father. Under mounting pressure from his grandmother to get married, a chance encounter leads him to Milon, a shy stranger he convinces to pose as his fiancée. She is a dedicated student, heading for university and success, but her sheltered life has left her isolated and longing. To keep up the façade, Rafi and Milon meet daily and, despite the very different worlds they both hail from, they begin to develop a connection. Ritesh Batra (‘The Lunchbox’) returns to Mumbai for this charming, bittersweet romance. The film had its world première at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and its European premiere at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. 2 CHRIS CURRID: Arklow’s Asgard Theatre will host the first solo concert of performer Chris Currid on Friday, October 11, at 8 p.m. Chris trained with Bull Alley Theatre in Dublin and has played numerous leading roles with musical societies and companies nationwide. He has also toured in Europe with the Rock Tenors. Based in Courtown Co Wexford, Chris is a vocal coach and performance art teacher. The evening will feature a special guest performance by the well-known Wicklow singer, Amy Penston. Members of the Currid School of Performing Arts will also entertain, accompanied by Conor McCarthy. To book, visit www.gr8events.ie. 3 DON BAKER: Legendary blues artist Don Baker and his band will perform at the Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely on Friday, October 11, at 8.30 p.m. The date is part of his Irish tour for his new album ‘Don Baker the Blues Man’ which covers 40 years of Don’s recording career. The Salsa and Bachata social dance event will include a beginner Bachata workshop where participants can learn all of the basic footwork and partner work. Then there will be dinner and drinks followed by a night of fun on the dance floor. The workshop is €10 at 6.30 p.m., with optional dinner at 8 p.m., and the party from 9 p.m. to 12.30 a.m. (admission free of charge). 5 CAR BOOT SALE: A car boot sale takes place in St Kevin’s Community Centre, Blessington on Sunday, October 13. There will be household and workshop goods, cakes, jams, CDs and clothing. For sellers the gates will open from 7 a.m., while the sale for buyers runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a limited amount of indoor tables available on a first-come basis. Every month a local charity receives a welcome donation from this event. 6 SOUND THERAPY: An introduction to sound therapy will be held in the Asgard Theatre, Arklow on Saturday, October 12, from 7 p.m. Increasingly popular, sound therapy uses aspects of the human voice and objects that resonate to encourage relaxation. The evening will start with simple exercises to help participants laugh together. This will be followed with a seated sound bath featuring the Tibetan singing bowl, gongs and more. Proceeds from the event will be donated to St Aidan’s Day Care Centre in Gorey and the Asgard Theatre. Booking is essential by calling 087 2760125. 7 MUSIC IN CALARY: A concert in aid of Sister Mary Killeen will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 11, in Calary Church. It will feature soprano Ava Dodd, accompanied by Rachel Factor, Ciara Brennan on harp and members of Roundwood Comhaltas. Local soprano Marie Gorman will also perform. This concert will raise funds to support Sister Mary Killeen’s work for street children in the slums of Nairobi and there is the option of a delicious supper before it starts. The supper will begin at 6 p.m. and the concert will start at 8 p.m. Tickets for the supper and concert are €40. while those for just the concert are €18, or €15 with concessions.
