Charlie shines for Goosebank

KILCOOLE CLAN NA GAEL 3-10 1-4
KILCOOLE produced an impressive performance to better a brave Clan na Gael side in the U15 Division 3 ‘C’ Plate final in a wet Newtown last Saturday afternoon.
A man-of-the-match display from midfielder Charlie Frawley and a stoic showing from full-back Louis Thomas were two of the key factors in this entertaining tussle.
The footballers from the Goosebank raced out to an early 1-3 to 0-0 lead with points from Oisin Taggart, Sean Byrne and full-forward Rhys Kelly and the uplifting major from the boot of Charlie Frawley after seven minutes with Clan na Gael struggling to make inroads and falling foul to a refereeing style that was frustrating the combined team’s management team.
They eventually got off the mark from a John Fox free after a foul on the young sharpshooter and he floated over a beauty.
Louis Thomas showed superb defensive skills soon after when dispossessing Fox and when Michael Shannon swung over a point after Charlie Frawley had struck the post to make it 1-4 to 0-1 the signs were not overly positive for Clan na Gael.
Luke Kelly grabbed Clan na Gael’s second point shortly afterwards and then we entered a wasteful period with turnovers and wides on both sides as players seemed determined to hop the ball on the horrifically greasy surface.
As the end of the first half neared it was Kilcoole who grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and two points, both from Rhys Kelly frees to send the Goosebank side in with a lighter step at 1-6 to 0-2 ahead.
A ripper of a goal after 20 seconds from Sean O’Rourke brought Clan na Gael kicking and screaming into this game but they were unable to push on and their goose was cooked when Charlie Frawley drove low and hard to the back of the Clan na Gael goal to make it 2-6 to 1-2.
Clan na Gael battled hard over the next phases and had a pointed free from John Fox after 14 minutes of the second half and another from the same man after 23 but they couldn’t breach Alex Dutton’s goal for a second time whereas Kilcoole were growing in confidence all the while and they finished with a flourish with 1-1 from substitute Christopher Horan and singles from Charlie Frawley and Ben Cambell to make it 3-10 to1-4atthedeath.
