MARY LYSTER RIP

Only a few weeks after her beloved brother Paddy passed away, sad news to report of the passing of Mary Lyster (née Conlon) of Shankill and formerly of Ballybawn, Kilmacanogue.

Mary passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 24, in her 86th year, at St Michael’s Hospital in the presence of her family. She was the beloved wife for 63 years of the late William (Bill) and loving mother of Gerry, Frank, William, John, Ray, Ben, Shane and Sharon; she will be greatly missed by her sons and daughter together with their wives and partners, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister Margie and by her extended family and friends.

A regular visitor to Kilmacanogue, she was recently out in Plucks having lunch with her son John and she was a lovely jolly character. Rest in Peace Mary.

HISTORY LECTURE

There was a great turnout for the Kilmacanogue History Society first talk of the autumn season last week in the Glenview. The speaker was Seán J Murphy MA, who informed all present about Lt. Edward Hempenstall, who was an officer in the Co. Wicklow militia in 1798 of whom was said to be a very tall and strong man, who was known locally as the ‘Walking Gallows’ because of his practice of hanging people he suspected of being members of the United Irishmen. He would accomplish this by swinging them over his back with a rope around their neck and then walking around till they were dead, he was also active in Kildare and Westmeath.

Seán gave all a very well researched talk and facilitated a very active Q & A session. Seán himself is a genealogist, historical researcher lecturer and author. He was a part-time genealogy teacher in UCD Adult Ed. Programme from 1989-2017 when he retired. He currently gives courses in Genealogy as part of the educational programme of the National Library of Ireland. All present really enjoyed the night and now look forward to the November lecture.

UNDER-15S LOSE NARROWLY

Hard Luck to the Clann Na Gael under-15s who were narrowly beaten in their under-15 final last week despite a brave effort in tough conditions against Kilcoole. Dylan Henry was ruled out with injury before the game but a poor first half performance was followed by a great effort in the second half.

The Full back line of Sam Condon, Andrew Doyle and Josh Mould were outstanding along with the rock-solid goalie Kieran Griffith. Further out the field, captain Mikey Doyle, John Fox and Luke Kelly battled bravely with Seán O’Rourke a real handful up front but not one player could be faulted for effort.

With 12 of this squad eligible for under-15s again next year, the future for these lads is bright but Kilcoole were deserving winners on the day. Final score was Kilcoole 3-07 to C na G 2-04.

SOCCER ACTION

The Glencormac under-8s were at home to Greystones on Saturday morning and had a great win. Special mention to Ruby Devlin and Eoin Dunne, who both played brilliantly in defence.

The under-12s travelled to Rathnew on Saturday and despite taking an early lead and holding out for most of the game, the home side struck twice late on to gain a 2-1 win.

The under-13s had a very good 5-2 win away to Greystones. Luke Honan hit a hattrick with Finn Kelly and Michael Prendergast also hitting the net in a good team performance.

Both the under-15s and the seniors game away to newly promoted Arklow Celtic on Sunday fell victim to the rain that fell Saturday.

Everyone at Glencormac United Football Club would like to wish Kilmacanogue the very best of luck in their Intermediate Championship Final this Sunday (13th). Five of the panel also star with the Glens as dual stars but this weekend, everybody is one so it’s get behind Mark, Dermot and the Lads time and hopefully that cup will find a home in Kilmacanogue Sunday evening, Good Luck everyone.
