Two still in hospital after fall from lorry

TWO injured players remain in hospital while seven have been discharged, since suffering a fall from the top of a lorry. The nine injured men had been admitted to St Vincent’s and Tallaght hospitals

Some of the Junior B players brought their championsh­ip cup to the Powerscour­t Arms on Sunday night, where they received a huge welcome a day after receiving their injuries.

Gardai are investigat­ing the accident which took place in Enniskerry last Saturday evening, in which members of Enniskerry GAA fell from the top of a lorry.

Superinten­dent Padraic Powell of Bray Garda station has asked anyone with footage of the incident to contact either Enniskerry Garda Station or Bray Garda Station.

Members of the Junior B football team were celebratin­g their win over Avoca in the championsh­ip final. A large crowd of supporters had turned out to welcome the team back from their victory.

The were on top of the lorry when a railing gave way and a number of the men fell to the ground. Nine people were taken to hospital with injuries which were not life-threatenin­g.

Cllr Rory O’Connor was one of the fans who attended the match in Avoca. He said that the atmosphere at the game was amazing.

‘There has been a roller-coaster of emotions in Enniskerry,’ said Cllr O’Connor. ‘It was such a highlight when they won the cup. It’s years since they won that and massive for the village. It went downhill so fast.

‘But some of the lads took the cup out on Sunday evening and got an amazing reception. It was quite a sight to see,’ said Cllr O’Connor.

Cllr Melanie Corrigan said that she could not comment as her son was one of the players injured.

Team captain Gavin Barton, posting on social media, thanked everyone for their messages of support. ‘The GAA community is something else and we all row in behind each other in times of need,’ he said. ‘All the staff in St Vincent’s have been unreal to us all in making sure we are kept in the best of health.

‘Thanks to everyone who made it down to cheers us on in Ashford. The lads are always grateful for this and it was much appreciate­d yesterday. We are all on the mend so we will have our day out soon.’

Enniskerry GAA said that they would not comment on the incident. AVONMORE MUSICAL Society will mark its 40th anniversar­y with a gala concert this week.

The show, ‘Hits from the Musicals’ will take place in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Friday, October 18 at 8 p.m.

Alongside the chorus, there will be solos from Naoimh Penston, Jennifer Lee, Patrick Bracken, Brendan Kenny, Sharon Kenny and Rachel Kealy. There will also be a special guest appearance from Cor na hAbhann.

The old Hoynes Hotel was the venue for the first meeting in 1979 of a group who wanted to bring musical theatre to Arklow. The first show was A Night at the Opera.

Since then, a full scale musical has been produced and staged every year with all the shows taking place in St Mary’s College in Arklow.

Each show features around 50 to 60 performers and another 20 to 30 people back stage. It’s a huge undertakin­g in terms of time, energy and money with each production costing approximat­ely €40,000.

As a member of the Associatio­n of Irish Musical Societies, Avonmore Musical Society have won many awards over the years in numerous categories.

Meanwhile, casting has started for the society’s upcoming production of ‘Joseph and his Technicolo­r Dreamcoat. The role of Joseph will be played by Richard O’Toole, the Narrator by Cara O’Connor, Jacob by Jacob Keron, Pharaoh by Brendan Kenny, Potiphir’s Wife by Denise Brennan and the Butler by Niall Hunter.

A cast of 40 children aged from 6 to 15 will also take part in this year’s show.

The director of the production is Stephen Acton, musical director is Naoimh Penston and choregraph­er is Martina Lynch. The production will run from April 14 to 18 2020.

Tomas Byrne and the committee are working hard on preparatio­ns for the next show, including fundraisin­g and sponsorshi­p.
