SIXTH YEAR ART TRIP
All the Sixth year art students visited IMMA on October 3 as part of their Leaving Certificate Art programme. Students had a very informative guided tour of the exhibition, ‘Life Above Everything, Lucien Freud and Jack B Yeats’. It was a very engaging exhibition. The students completed worksheets, sketched different artworks and came away well informed and a little more prepared for their Leaving Certificate Art History and Appreciation paper.
JUNIOR CERT RESULTS
The long wait for the Junior Cert results was finally over for the current Transition Year students on Friday, October 4, There was much celebration in Fatima Hall as the girls received their Certificates. Overall, the results were excellent, and we congratulate all the students on their hard work and commitment to their studies.
We extend a special word of congratulations to Ella Healy. Nationwide, only 20 students achieved maximum grades; Ella is one of this elite academic group. She achieved eight A grades and two distinctions, the equivalent of 10 A grades on the old grading system. All at DCW are very proud of Ella and her outstanding achievement.
Two other students, Morgan Elliott and Catherine Moyseyeva, excelled in the exams. Morgan achieved seven A grades, one distinction and two higher merits, while Catherine also achieved seven A grades, two higher merits and one merit.
All three girls must be commended for their achievements. Many thanks also to their teachers for their support and guidance throughout the Junior Cycle.
The under-16 and under-19 basketball teams continued with their winning streak this week as they took on local rivals CCM Both teams put in a great team effort and won their respective games. Well done to Senior Captain Róisín Ring, firstly for her brilliant individual play and secondly for her strong leadership skills. Many thanks to CCM for hosting the games. The next fixture for the under-16 and under-19 teams will be against another local school, EGS Then the under-19 team will travel to Bray to take on St Killian’s.
JUNIOR GAELIC
Our Junior footballers had a tough assignment on Monday against an extremely strong Carnew side. The girls tried valiantly but lost out on the day. Faye Larkin, Kirsty Dunne and Clodagh Quinn put in very strong performances. The girls battled right to the final whistle, and we must praise them for their fighting spirit. The next fixtures will be against GCM and St Mary’s and are due to be played next week.
BIN IT ROADSHOW
Our First year students enjoyed the recent visit from the ‘Bin it Roadshow’. This group, through the medium of drama, try to raise pupil awareness on the environmental impact of their littering. They stress the importance of correct litter disposal of rubbish, especially chewing gum. The group gave a very energetic performance and included student participation. The girls reported that the drama was more effective than a lecture and that they very much enjoyed being part of the show. It was a very informative session which will hopefully change behaviours.
JUNIOR BAKE OFF
On Thursday, October 10, the kitchen in DCW was a hive of activity, as the 10 pairs of finalists in the Junior Bake-Off, set about baking their themed cakes for a special occasion.
The standard was extremely high, and after much deliberation, Niamh Kavanagh and Jessica Griffey from third-year were awarded the first prize for their ‘School’s out for summer’ cake. This decadent cake depicted a sandy beach which was decorated with handmade shell chocolates.
Second prize was awarded to second-year students Clara Dunne and Sarah Allen for their ‘Halloween Horror’ cake. The third prize was awarded to Hanna Duggan and Katelyn Doyle from third-year, for their cake entitled ‘Bunny in the Hole’.
Congratulations to the prize winners and to all the students who reached the final stage of the competition. A big thanks to the Home Economics Department for organising the event. As it was Open Night the impressive creations were on display in the kitchen later that evening for all the primary school students and their parents to view.
OPEN NIGHT
The school’s annual open evening took place on Thursday, October 10, All fifth and sixth class students and their parents were invited to visit the school. The guests were taken on guided tours around the school to visit the specialist classrooms and talk to the teachers and current students.
The primary school students were invited to participate in experiments in the labs, tackle puzzles in the maths room, taste goodies in the kitchen and were serenaded by members of the choir in the music room.
Then at 7.30 p.m. Management gave an address in Fatima hall and answered questions from the parents. The night was a great success, and we would like to thank the all the students who provided the tours and all the teachers and students involved in the various activities throughout the school.
LUNCHTIME CLUBS
Three additional lunchtime activities began this week. The Science club and the Lego Architecture Club which both run on a Monday and the ‘Just Dance’ activity which takes place on a Wednesday. The focus of the Science Club is on practical experiments and student-led investigations. In the first meeting, the students were making oobleck and conducted the ‘elephant toothpaste’ experiment. Lots more fun experiments are on the agenda, and all students are welcome.
If you think you might have an interest in design and construction, then come along to the Lego Architecture Club. You will have DCW Junior Bake Off winners Niamh Kavanagh and Jessica Griffey with their ‘School’s out for Summer’ cake. the opportunity to build structures such as the Great Wall of China, The London Skyline, as well as the New York Skyline. Models range in size, some consisting of 2000 pieces while others contain 6000 pieces. If you think you would find this activity therapeutic pop into J4 on Monday lunchtime.
If you are feeling a little more active and are up for some fun, why not join Hannah and Kate, the head and deputy head girl and all the prefects in J2 on a Wednesday at lunchtime. Here you can show your moves and get into the groove as you try to follow the dance routines on the overhead projector. Lots of laughs guaranteed.
ZEMINAR
All the Transition Year students, along with their tutors, took the trip last week to Zeminar in the National Sports Campus to learn about positive mental health. They enjoyed the many interactive stalls and had the opportunity to listen to talks from speakers such as Shane Carthy and Niamh Fitzpatrick. The girls had a brilliant experience and hopefully took away some useful tips on how to stay positive and mentally strong.
Fundraising for our new sports hall has well and truly begun. Thanks to everyone who made our golf classic such a big success. Particular thanks to Mr Graham Richmond for all his hard work in organising/running the event. A big thank you also to Mr Eugene Dooley who conducted the auction in the evening.
We have a bag pack in Tesco on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th November. Any parents who are interested in helping out can contact Mr McGettigan at the school.
Our Buy a Brick campaign was launched at our annual prize giving evening on 10th October. This is our main fundraiser and details can be found by visiting egs.ie/sportshall or contacting the school office.
FORM 3 STUDY SKILLS
Form 3 students participated in a study skills seminar on Friday 11th October. The seminar was led by Student Enrichment Services and as always, it proved to be very informative.
