HISTORY SOCIETY

It was with great regret that last Thursday night’s meetings of the Enniskerry History Society, which meets under the guidance of its president John Callan, in the Powerscourt Arms Hotel had to be cancelled at 9 p.m. following the non-arrival of the guest speaker for the evening, James Scannell, as there were no scheduled Bray to Enniskerry buses in service due to operational reasons.

James had been invited to present his lecture ‘A Brief History of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) 1876-1958’ in which would have provided an outline history of this major Irish railway company, formed by the amalgamation of several independent companies, and operated an extensive bus, rail and tram service on Dublin’s northside in addition to providing bus and rail services throughout what is modern day Northern Ireland. John Callan extends his sincere apologies to all those who came to meeting for the inconvenience caused to them as does James Scannell, who was dependent on the bus operator to bring to the meeting on time. Its hoped to hold this lecture at a later date. A letter of complaint had been submitted to the bus operator concerned and their response is awaited.

Some events taking place which may of interested to members and supporters of the Enniskerry History Society are tonight’s (Wednesday) 8 p.m. lecture by Liz Pilkington on ‘The Oratory (formerly Dominican Convent): this hidden gem decorated in the Celtic Style by Sister Concepta Lynch’ to the Dun Laoghaire Borough Historical Society in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. All welcome – entrance €3; tomorrow night’s (Thursday) 8 p.m. lecture by Joseph E. A Connell Jr. covering ‘The shadow war: Michael Collins and the politics of violence Ireland 1919 to 1921’ to the Bray Cualann Historical Society in the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow. All welcome – admission €5; and the 8 p.m. lecture by Theresa Hicks on ‘The Kennedys of Mount Kennedy’ to the Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society in the Holy Rosary Centre adjoining Holy Rosary Church, Greystones, Co. Wicklow. All welcome – admission charge; this Saturdays 3 p.m. lecture by Brian White on ‘The fascinating life story of WW1 Nurse Josephine Heffernan and her adventures and travels to the world’ to the Western Front Association (Dublin Branch) in Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin two – all welcome; next Monday night’s 8 p.m. lecture by Charles Egan on ‘The Famine in Wicklow’ to the Wicklow History Society in the De La Salle Pastoral Centre in Wicklow – donation; and next Wednesday night’s 6 p.m. lecture by Brendan Twomey on ‘Managing Money in early 18th Century Ireland: Swift and Money’ to the Old Dublin Society in Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 – all welcome, admission free.

concern was expressed over the state of the graveyard which was falling into disrepair. It was decided to collected subscriptions to prevent it from falling into further disrepair.

Yet again as in previous weekends we went from balmy sunshine conditions on Saturday to heavy rain on Sunday. Thankfully most of our games were played on Saturday with only the 8’s game at home to Avonmore postponed due to the weather and the 13’s was left idle with no game to play.

Of the games that were played our under-nines travelled to Shillelagh where they put in a decent performance. On the day among the players who starred were Conor Shevlin, Colin Healy and Theo Messitt.

Our 10’s lost out narrowly at home to Rathnew on a 3-2 scoreline. This was an excellent game of football and could have gone either way. Lucas Dowdall and Jack Barlow scored the Newtown goals while Ryan McDonald and Oisin Duffy were among the Newtown players who starred. Amazingly not one free kick was awarded in this game as a very good referee let the game flow.
