There were two sections to last week’s entertaining competition and the top spot in the sitting pairs playing North/South hands all evening went to Ann Houston and Betty Cassidy-Nevin who are showing consistently good form this season. In second place were Pam McDonogh and Neville Caine. Gwen Teevan and Michael Ryan were third. The other section made up of moving pairs going to the next table after each round were lead into the winners enclosure by Marian Canavan and her trusty partner, Mary Dickenson. These two are also showing their winning talents having taken up the game of bridge relatively recently. They were a good few points ahead of second East/ West pair of Kay Murphy and her sister partner, Mary Kilcoyne. In third spot were Harvey and Caroline Brown.

This Wednesday, October 23, is the week before the traditional Club Halloween party night on Wednesday, October 30, when members are invited to dress up appropriately for the occasion and if having a mind to do so, could pre-order a taxi to return them home after the celebrations on the night. The Wicklow Wine Company are the culprits for selecting a superb selection of white wines to accompany the trick and treats the members bring in. There will be a non-alcoholic option for players who must drive. (Many members are gifted party animals!)

The beginner’s tuition hour will be suspended on the Halloween party night. Last Wednesday there was considerable noise from these new novice players as they enjoyed learning some of the finer points of the game. They seemed to be enjoying the experience judging by the amount of laughter coming from the tables.

As usual the free hour tuition session for novices and absolute beginners from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. every Wednesday evening will continue in November introducing this card game to anyone who wishes to come along to the Dominican Ecology Centre from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m.

SOME of Spain’s most highly-regarded travel professionals enjoyed a visit to the Garden County as part of a tour of Ireland as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.

The travel agents were from one of Spain’s leading tour operators, Tourmundial Viajes, as well as El Corte Inglés – the tour operating arm of Spanish retailing giant El Corte Inglés.

The visitors were here to experience at first-hand the wealth of things to see and do and one of the highlights of their action-packed itinerary was a guided tour of Russborough House in Blessington. Barbara Wood, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Spain, said: ‘We were delighted to invite these Spanish travel professionals to Wicklow this week.’
