Pauline off to the opera

-

A Wicklow artist’s work is being exhibited as part of the Wexford Opera Festival, which began yesterday (Tuesday).

Pauline Merry is showcasing her paintings at the EPA Building at the Johnstown Castle Estate for eight days.

‘Climate of Change’ is dedicated to the children of the world.

‘Through the use of mixed media, vivid colour, the subtle use of materials, and striking imagery of symbol and metaphor ‘Climate of Change’ in its 15-panel structure, tells a simple Creation story,’ explained Pauline. ‘It gives rise to a multitude of thoughts, feelings and associations that draw the beholder into the mysteries of the human condition and into the very heart of humanity. While the exhibition depicts the struggle and suffering of humanity, overall it is a story of hope,’ she said.

‘Climate of Change’ is a metaphor for the reawakening that is necessary to see climate change as a symptom of a much greater malaise, one of a bigger global disconnect. The visual story is about the connectivity of all things in our Universe and how we, as unique individuals, are connected by genetic coding to all other human beings and to our earth as one great global family that must act with responsibility and urgency in the face of the gargantuan challenge of saving our dying world. Tireless work done by scientists, groups, communities and individuals worldwide for many, many years have at last succeeded in bringing these realities into our homes and into our lives.

‘The beginnings of this exhibition grew slowly from a strong motivation, ‘to do something’ about so much that didn’t seem right in our world. As a grandmother I felt a huge sense of urgency. This body of work, was originally entitled, ‘The Heart of the Matter’ and was first exhibited at The Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely in 2018,’ Pauline added.

The exhibition opened yesterday (Tuesday, October 22) and will remain open until this Friday, October 25. It will open again from Tuesday, October 29, to Friday, November 1.
