WELL done to all the Wicklow athletes at the Autumn Open Cross Country in Abbotstown on Sunday. Brian Geraghty (Sli Cualann AC) had a fantastic race to win the masters 45+ category 7.5k race, and as a result will get to represent Ireland at the British and Irish masters.

Una Britton (Kilcoole AC) also had a great race to finish fourth in the senior women’s 6k.

Best of luck to all the Wicklow athletes taking part in another very busy weekend coming up. On Saturday, It’s the Leinster even ages and novice cross country in Kilkenny, then Sunday morning will see a huge number of athletes from all over Wicklow taking part in the Dublin Marathon.

Meanwhile there was great news from the west of the county with Dunlavin’s Alan Miley capturing the Inter title for St Kevins.

Alan was representing St Kevins CC Dunlavin at the Inter Boys Leinster Schools Combined Events Championships in Abbotstown, he had to compete in five events 60mts hurdles, long jump, 200m, shot putt and 800m. The competition is won on a point system for each event.

Alan was not in top form due to a severe tummy bug but did not let that hinder him with the help of his teacher Maura Reid securing a score of 3020 points to win the event. A former Community Games participant, he had a 160 points to spare over game’s rival Jack Forde of Wexford CBS. Eve Lacey from Roundwood was third in the Inter Girls.

‘All in Wicklow Community Games congratulate Alan on his continued success on the athletic track and wish his mother Anne a speedy recovery after a hip operation last week,’ said a spoksperson. ‘And get well to Margret Reid, County Board member, who is also recovering after a hip operation’.
