Carnew power to Shield win

Redmond shines against Bray Emmets in Ballinakill

at Ballinakill CARNEW EMMETS BRAY EMMETS 3-9 1-3

THE under-15 hurlers from Carnew and Bray Emmets put on a fine display of hurling on what was a wet and miserable afternoon in Ballinakill.

With heavy under foot conditions the Carnew men got off to a dream start when Ryan Austin got out in from of his man and played a peace of a ball into the hand of the ever dangerous Billy Molloy who without looking got the ball into his hand and rifled it low into the bottom corner of the Bray net.

An ideal start and a lead that the Carnew men would never let slip for the entire game. The Bray boys did not let this put their ambitions of winning the shield get them down and they responded in the best way possible with a long point from their full-forward Adam Prunty.

Carnew then got on top around the middle and they were finding Billy Molloy out in front of his man, the young man was on fire striking balls over the bar off both his right and left it was a joy to watch. Molloy would have 1-3 to his name by the end of the opening half.

Midway through the opening half the Bray lads got the lifeline they were craving when a mix up in the Carnew defence allowed them to get in for a major of their own. A ball was played across the goal line and a hurl from a Carnew defender prevent it from going out over the end line and in the melee to get the ball away from the goal Bray corner-forward Finn Redmond pulled on the ball into the back of the net.

Was this to be the kick start the Bray players needed? As the rain started to pour and the umbrellas raised the bray lads got another white flag raised and the crowd started to believe they could win this one. A point from Daniel Redmond themed the tied for the Carnew boys.

With the rain and ground conditions getting slippery the young men of Carnew and Bray need to be complemented for the level of skill who was being put on display. Carnew would close out the opening half with a goal from Shane Byrne after some great dogged hurling from Callum Patterson to dispose the Bray defender as he was coming out with the ball.

Callum gets the ball out to Billy Molloy who fires the ball into the path of the incoming midfielder and Byrne fires the ball to the back of the Bray net for a real sucker blow just coming into half-time.

Half-time score: Carnew 2-5, Bray 1-2.

Bray got the second half off to a lighting start with a point from Sean Kenny after a good long ball from Finn Tracey inside the opening minute. This unfortunately was to be the last score for the Bray boys as Carnew upped the ante and dominated the remainder of the game.

A free from Daniel Redmond for the scoring underway for the Carnew and they would register a future two score inside the opening five minutes another free from Redmond and a fine score from Shane Byrne who had moved out of midfield and into a more attacking role.

While dominating around the centre Carnew were finding it hard to increase on their advantage this was mainly down to some fine defensive display from the Bray defensive.

The number of blocks and hooks cannot go unmentioned from both sides.

While the Bray defenders were making it hard on the Carnew forwards, it must be noted that the Carnew defence were immense throughout the game, every attack which Bray had in the second half was snuffed out by a dominant, dogged Carnew rear guard.

It took until the 20th minute of the second half for Carnew to register the next score of the game when Shane Byrne found himself in space and off the left popped the ball over from inside the D.

The final score of the game was to come from a free from Daniel Redmond.

A ball which was surely intended to sail over the crossbar dropped short and straight into the back of the net.

It was round off a fine display from the Carnew man which received the Man of the Match award at the end of the game and one which was well deserved.
