Doran shines for Kiltegan
Attacker key to title win
KILTEGAN lifted the Intermediate camogie league title on Saturday with an efficient performance over championship winners Bray Emmets.
Backboned by a very solid defensive unit, Kiltegan started the quicker of the sides and they found their first major of the game with only five minutes on the clock through Lynn Fenton.
A long ball into the forward line was won by Anne-Marie Doran and the Kiltegan full-forward fired perfectly across the goal to Fenton who supplied the finish. Doran was to prove to be a constant threat throughout the game and finish with 2-4 to her name.
Bray responded with a free from Sarah Lambe in the eighth minute but after a cagey 15 minutes, Kiltegan struck for a second major. Good work by Anna Byrne out the field ended up with Anne-Marie Doran getting on the end of the move. After firing a shot goalward, the unfortunate Una Smierciak tried her very best but couldn’t keep the ball out of the back of the net.
Doran would strike again two minutes later for her second after good work in the Kiltegan full-back line from Selina Byrne, Doran was out in front again and rounded her opponent to fire into the net leaving Smierciak very little chance.
The long ball strategy into Doran and Lynn Fenton was providing fruit for Kiltegan and a further point from the Kiltegan full-forward made it a nine-point game approaching half-time.
However, Bray got just the tonic they needed before the break after a surging run from Claire Benville produced a save from Patricia Kehoe, but Erica Bellamy was on hand to turn the rebound to the net leaving the score line 1-1 to 3-1 at the interval.
The second half seen both sides trade scores with Anne-Marie Doran slotting a free and Sarah Lambe dispossessing Patricia Kehoe superbly to fire over a point. Lambe intercepted a Kiltegan clearance moments later and fired over her third of the day.
Bray continued to lay siege on the Kiltegan goal but Selina Byrne, Aine Timmins and Sarah Jane Winder really came into their own in the second half with some exceptional defending.
Tania Wynne, wearing 11, played a little deeper and helped turn over ball while Amber House covered every inch of Aughrim chasing the opposition and racing away from them with the ball on her hurl.
On one such foray into Bray territory, the ball was worked to Anne-Marie Doran who fired a shot/pass toward the goal and the alert Ciara Boland was on hand to catch the ball in front of the Bray players and kick to the net. Kiltegan saw out the final 10 minutes at their ease and were very worthy champions on the day.
