Companies on short list for PakMan award

COUNTY Wicklow organisations A Plus Service Centre and Pure Project have short-listed for prestigious national environmental awards

A Plus Service Centre, based in Bray, and Pure Project, based in Laragh, have both been short-listed for the2019 Pakman Awards. Now in its fifth year, the national environmental awards celebrate sustainability champions who are putting innovative recycling and waste management practices into place across Ireland.

A Plus Service Centre has been short-listed in the Tyre Champion category. A Plus Service Centre have been advocates for tyre recycling and have volunteered to assist Repak ELT in surveys and data collection for many years. Through all media communications, A Plus Service Centre encourage people to always deal with a registered and approved tyre fitter that recycles their waste tyres properly. A Plus Service Centre also run their own annual weekend tyre road show at Tesco in Bray, highlighting safety and recycling.

Pure Project has been short-listed in the Environmental Education and Awareness Initiative category. The Pure Project is a partnership project and was established to combat illegal dumping and fly-tipping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. Pure Project utilise a multi-disciplined approach, incorporating a number of enforcement and preventative measures including public reporting of dumping incidents, dedicated clean-up vehicle of illegal dumping, GPS/GIS recording of all dumping sites, covert CCTV, public awareness campaigns, environment/community projects and educational initiatives.

Since the establishment of Pure, the project has removed over 3,300 tonnes of illegal dumping from the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. If you were to put all this waste into standard household rubbish bags, it would fill over 400,000 bags.

The winners of these categories will be announced at the 2019 Pakman Awards which takes place on October 24 in the Intercontinental Hotel, Dublin. Not only will A Plus Service Centre and Pure Project be in the running to take home top prize in their categories, they will also be eligible for the overall Pakman Award, the winner of which will also be announced at the awards ceremony.
